Nineteen green‐coloured gems in jewellery of the Roman period from the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki were studied with optical microscope, mobile Raman and Vis‐NIR spectroscopy as well as EDXRF. Seventeen out of nineteen gems were identified as natural emeralds with characteristics similar to Egyptian emeralds.
