C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Erythropoietin modulates hepatic inflammation, glucose homeostasis, and soluble epoxide hydrolase and epoxides in high‐fat diet‐induced obese mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Erythropoietin administration suppresses hepatic soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) expression, leading to increased CYP‐derived epoxides. This is associated with a shift in hepatic macrophage polarization characterized by reduced M1 markers and increased M2 markers, along with reduced hepatic inflammation, suppressed hepatic lipogenesis, and attenuated ...

Review of Ultraviolet-C Light Against Coronavirus

2021
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV2) is a new highly pathogenic virus that has induced the COVID-19 disease in over 27.6 million patients and caused over 900 thousand deaths around the world by September 8th, 2020, nine months after the first reported case in China, according to the World Health Organization.

Self-cooling water disinfection reactor with ultraviolet-C light-emitting diodes

Environmental Technology, 2022
The use of ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a water sterilization light source poses a serious challenge in heat dissipation. High junction temperatures reduce the radiant power and lifespan of UV-C LEDs. In this study, a novel self-cooling water disinfection reactor was developed to dissipate Joule heat from UV-C LEDs.

Overcoming melanin tolerance using UV-C light

2023
Optical strategies to combat microorganisms provides an alternative to reliance on chemical control, particularly in food production. UV-C light (within the spectrum of 200 to 280nm) is well-known as an effective germicidal wavelength, widely used even during the pandemic.

Ultraviolet-C light as a means of disinfecting anesthesia workstations

American Journal of Infection Control, 2017
Anesthesia workstations (AWs) are a reservoir for pathogenic organisms potentially associated with surgical site infections. This study examined the effectiveness of the Tru-D SmartUVC device (Tru-D LLC, Nashville, TN) on bioburden reduction (BR) on AWs.Strips of tissue inoculated with a known concentration of either Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus
