There are many approaches to improve the mechanical properties of materials. In the most cases an increase in quasistatic strength is followed by a decrease in ductility. In the field of ultrafine grained materials this decrease is, because of the dominant strengthening mechanism of grain boundary strengthening, not a necessary conse-quence.
