The Need for Assay Harmonization: Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) Assay Example

A case of bronchogenic cyst with high production of antigen CA 19–9

Cancer, 1989
A 35-year-old man was hospitalized with complaints of retrosternal pain and high fever. A chest radiograph showed a large round mass in the mediastinum. Of the several tumor markers in the serum tested, only CA 19-9 was elevated. Thoracotomy revealed a cystic mass with purulent hemorrhagic materials.

Comparison of CA 72–4 with CA 19–9 and Carcinoembryonic Antigen in the Serodiagnostics of Gastrointestinal Malignancies

Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, 1989
Serum levels of the new tumor-associated marker CA 72-4 were measured in healthy controls (n = 64) and patients with benign (n = 410) or malignant (n = 199) gastrointestinal diseases. A cut-off limit of 4 U/ml was established. Tumor-indicating sensitivity was compared with that of the conventional markers carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and CA 19-9.

Carbohydrate Antigen CA 19-9

1995
This tumour-associated antigen is a high molecular weight mucin epitope expression is defined by a homologous monoclonal antibody system — the CA 19-9 antibody The antigenic epitope represents a sialylated Lewisa blood group pentasaccharide and, as such, is similar to that detected by some other monocloncal antibody systems.

Significance of measurement of a carbohydrate antigenic determinant 19-9 (CA 19-9) for monitoring colorectal cancer patients

The Japanese Journal of Surgery, 1986
The significance of measurement of serum CA 19-9 levels and the correlation between the serum levels of CA 19-9 and CEA in 61 patients with colorectal cancer were investigated. CA 19-9 levels above 37 U/ml were found in 24.6 per cent, while CEA levels above 5 ng/ml were observed in 34.4 per cent. Elevation of one or both of two antigens was found in 44.
