Resynchronisation of the Biological Clock Using Exposure to Low Oxygen Levels in Humans: An Exploratory Study

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Exposure to reduced oxygen levels occurs in several real‐world contexts, such as during air travel or altitude exposure, and emerging evidence suggests that hypoxia may interact with molecular pathways involved in circadian regulation. This exploratory study investigated the effects of normobaric hypoxia on circadian phase shifting in humans ...

Additive Effects of Time Awake and Number of Flights on Fatigue in Short‐Haul Pilots: Implications for Duty Time Regulation

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, EarlyView.
In a sample of 553 flights from 37 short‐haul pilots, time awake and number of flights had additive effects on fatigue, such that high fatigue levels were reached 2.4 h earlier when 4 flights were operated, compared with one flight. ABSTRACT Time awake affects airline pilots' fatigue but it is less clear how workload during that time awake impacts ...

A method to evaluate stiffness and damping parameters of cabin suspension system for heavy truck

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2016
Both stiffness and damping parameters of cabin suspension have important influences on the dynamic performance of cabin system for heavy truck. To theoretically study ride comfort of cabin system, the stiffness and damping parameter values of cabin ...

Radical dystopia: The comic modernism of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty‐Four

open access: yesOrbis Litterarum, EarlyView.
Abstract The present essay turns the received view of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty‐Four on its head, arguing that Orwell's dystopian classic mobilizes the modernist techniques of T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land to lampoon the ideological fatalism of Eliot and other cultural conservatives.

Assessment of Pollen Production, Pollen Viability, Autofertility and Paternal Success in Faba Bean (Vicia faba L.) for Better Exploitation of Grain Yield Heterosis

open access: yesPlant Breeding, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In animal‐pollinated plants, pollen dispersal depends on several plant and animal characteristics that can influence the paternal success of a plant. Paternal success affects the genetic contribution of a genotype to the next generation, which is relevant to plant breeding.

Impacts of reclamation approaches on plant establishment in an arid environment during copper mine revegetation

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Introduction Revegetation using native vegetation is a commonly used technique to reclaim landscapes degraded by mining activities. Revegetation efforts in the arid Southwestern United States face physical, geochemical, hydrological, and biological challenges unique to drylands.
