Animating blossom: Time‐lapse to encourage plant awareness in the YouTube era

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Time‐lapse videos can effectively capture key traits of flower blossoms, such as color, 3D structure, and temporal changes, making them valuable complements to herbarium specimens and other botanical collections. Despite the abundance of such videos on YouTube, most provide no ecological and botanical insights.

Bleogens: Cactus-Derived Anti-Candida Cysteine-Rich Peptides with Three Different Precursor Arrangements

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2017
Cysteine-rich peptides (CRPs) play important host-defense roles in plants. However, information concerning CRPs in the Cactaceae (cactus) family is limited, with only a single cactus-derived CRP described to date. Here, we report the identification of 15

The shared benefits of fallen fruits: A novel mechanism stabilizing a nursery pollination mutualism between Sambucus and kateretid beetles

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Understanding how cooperative interactions remain stable matters for biodiversity because many plants rely on specialist insects that can also impose reproductive costs. We studied the interaction between Sambucus sieboldiana and seed‐consuming Heterhelus beetles through detailed field observations and pollination experiments.

Effects of Opuntia ficus-indica on Growth Performance and Serum Parameters of Broiler Chicken in Algeria

open access: yesTropicultura, 2019
Thanks to the wide diversity of soil and climate, Algeria has a substantial number of plants which can be used in animal feed. This work is a part of the barbaric fig cladodes evaluation, widely present in the Algerian rural landscape, as a broiler ...

Retrospective image analysis for long‐term demography using Google Earth imagery

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
We demonstrate that high‐resolution Google Earth imagery, combined with minimal field validation, enables retrospective tracking of individual invasive plants. The image shows one of the monitored individuals of Opuntia sp. in Greece. Our approach reveals long‐term demographic patterns, recruitment dynamics, and spatial expansion without continuous ...

Comparative Analysis of Stress Adaptation in the Yeast Microbiome of Cactus

open access: yesYeast, EarlyView.
Yeasts and related fungi isolated from cacti or nearby non‐cactus plants were characterized phenotypically and genomically, revealing differences that hint at modes of adaptation to the cactus host. ABSTRACT Together with other fungi, yeasts make up a significant component of the plant microbiome. As the planet warms, cacti expand their range.
