A review of the prevalence, utility, and caveats of using chloroplast simple sequence repeats for studies of plant biology

open access: yesApplications in Plant Sciences, Volume 2, Issue 12, December 2014., 2014
Microsatellites occur in all plant genomes and provide useful markers for studies of genetic diversity and structure. Chloroplast microsatellites (cpSSRs) are frequently targeted because they are more easily isolated than nuclear microsatellites. Here, we quantified the frequency and uses of cpSSRs based on a literature review of over 400 studies ...

Using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA to Assess Genetic Diversity and Structure of Natural Calophyllum brasiliense (Clusiaceae) Populations in Riparian Forests

open access: yesInternational Journal of Forestry Research, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
The objective of this study was to assess the genetic variability in two natural populations of Calophyllum brasiliense located along two different rivers in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, using RAPD molecular markers. Eighty‐two polymorphic fragments were amplified using 27 primers.

Sistema de reprodução em Caesalpinia echinata Lam. implantada em arboreto experimental [PDF]

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Botânica, 2005
The mating system of Caesalpinia echinata Lam. implanted in arboretum was studied by allozymes analysis of progeny arrays using the mixed-mating model and correlated-mating model. Deviations from mixed-mating model were observed from heterogeneity of pollen pools allele frequencies that fertilized different trees.

Libidibia ferrea Mature Seeds Promote Antinociceptive Effect by Peripheral and Central Pathway: Possible Involvement of Opioid and Cholinergic Receptors

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
Libidibia ferrea (LF) is a medicinal plant that holds many pharmacological properties. We evaluated the antinociceptive effect in the LF aqueous seed extract and Lipidic Portion of Libidibia ferrea (LPLF), partially elucidating their mechanisms. Histochemical tests and Gas chromatography of the LPLF were performed to characterize its fatty acids ...

SIX POTENTIAL WOODS FOR BOWS OF STRINGED INSTRUMENTS: ORGANOLEPTIC PROPERTIES, MACHINING AND COMMERCIAL AVAILABILITY

open access: yesRevista do Instituto Florestal, 2011
In this paper it was investigated the organoleptic properties and machining of six potential woods for bows of stringed instruments and compared the results with those mentioned for the Caesalpinia echinata wood, the reference for modern bows.

Ants as Indicators in Brazil: A Review with Suggestions to Improve the Use of Ants in Environmental Monitoring Programs

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
We describe the use of ants as indicators in Brazil, based on a critical review of published articles. The analysis of fifty‐eight papers, encompassing a range of almost 25 years, indicates an increased number of studies using ants as indicators in the last decade. Among the parameters analyzed in the papers, species composition is the most suitable to

Identifying Brazilwood’s Marker Component, Urolithin C, in Historical Textiles by Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesHeritage, 2021
The fugitive nature of the colorants obtained from sappanwood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) or the South American species commonly known as ‘brazilwoods’ (including other Caesalpinia species and Paubrasilia echinata (Lam.)) makes the identification of ...

Intracultural Variation in the Knowledge of Medicinal Plants in an Urban‐Rural Community in the Atlantic Forest from Northeastern Brazil

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
This study assessed the intracultural knowledge of the use of medicinal plants in an urban‐rural community in an Atlantic forest fragment in northeastern Brazil. We examined the importance of native and exotic species and the effects of gender and age on that knowledge.

Protecting threatened species and music traditions

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and the Environment, Volume 23, Issue 6, August 2025.
Musical instruments are indispensable to music traditions worldwide and often made from natural materials derived from species that are increasingly endangered. International trade threatens the survival of some of these species, as addressed by their inclusion in the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora ...

Glycosaminoglycans Modify Elastase Action In Vitro and Enhance Elastase‐Induced Cell Death in Cultured Fibroblasts

open access: yesInternational Scholarly Research Notices, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Human neutrophil elastase (HNE) has been shown to be involved on death of different cell types, including epithelial lung cells, which is related to several pulmonary diseases. Since HNE activity may be influenced by extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules such as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), and fibroblasts are the most common ECM‐producing cells of lung ...
