Calcium in Pregnancy and Lactation

Pregnancy and lactation are times of high calcium demand. Approximately 25 to 30 g of calcium are transferred to the fetal skeleton by the end of pregnancy. The fetus accumulates 2–3 mg/d of calcium during the first trimester, increasing to 250 mg/d during the third trimester (1).
