The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Elk forage response to prescribed fire in Boyes meadow, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, California

open access: yesCalifornia Fish and Wildlife Journal, 2020
Prescribed fire should increase plant and forage biomass for herbivores in meadows, but the response is likely to be influenced by environmental conditions.

California Dreaming? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Over the past few years, California became the setting for shocking tales of sex inequality and abuse in Hollywood and Silicon Valley. Decades after women achieved educational parity. men still run the corporate world.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Complete mitogenome sequence of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti derived from field isolates from California and South Africa

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2018
The Aedes aegypti mitogenome (Mt) sequences of field isolates from California and South Africa revealed a deletion between position 14,522 and 14,659 of the Mt contig of the AaegL5 reference genome.

Apparent habitat extensions of dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) in response to climate transients in the California Current

open access: yesScientia Marina, 1999
Dolphinfish, Coryphaena hippurus, a globally distributed, fast growing, predatory species has extended its habitat poleward off the west coast of North America in response to atmosphere-ocean climate transients that can be measured throughout the Pacific

Review of California Wildfire Evacuations from 2017 to 2019 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Between 2017 and 2019, California experienced a series of devastating wildfires that together led over one million people to be ordered to evacuate. Due to the speed of many of these wildfires, residents across California found themselves in challenging ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Analysis of the complete organellar genomes of the rockweed Fucus spiralis (Fucaceae, Phaeophyceae) supports its infraspecific recognition as Fucus vesiculosus var. spiralis

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2018
Fucus spiralis L. is a broadly distributed monoecious intertidal seaweed. The specific status of F. spiralis however is debatable. Here, we contribute to the bioinformatics and systematics of F.
