Worldwide, the number of adults with diabetes is expected to rise to about 440 million by 2030, almost 80% of whom will be in low-income and middleincome countries. Management of diabetes is now perceived to represent a much more complex issue than glycaemic control alone, and there is a strong need for new treatment strategies.
