Members of the blowfly family (Calliphoridae) are usually the first insect species to arrive at a corpse, using the body as an oviposition site, and, as such, they are the most important group of insects used to estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI ...

Phylogenomics and the evolution of larval feeding habits in the blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae)
Phylogenomic data from anchored hybrid enrichment provide a new phylogeny of Calliphoridae that delimits the family and confirms division into eight monophyletic subfamilies. Fossil‐calibrated divergence times place the origin of Calliphoridae in the mid‐Eocene (ca. 41 Mya) along with other rapidly radiating families of oestroid Diptera. Reconstruction

Development of a GC–MS method for methamphetamine detection in Calliphora vomitoria L. (Diptera: Calliphoridae) [PDF]
Entomotoxicology is the study of using insects for the detection of drugs and other chemical substances in decomposing tissues. One research aspect in particular is the effects of these substances on arthropod development and morphology, and their consequences on the post mortem interval estimation. Since methamphetamine (MA) is becoming commonplace as

Reintroduced White Storks (Ciconia ciconia) Have Similar Diets to Their Wild Conspecifics
We explored the dietary composition and compared pellet morphology using pellet analysis (n = 23) between two White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) groups to assess reintroduction effectiveness that consisted of released individuals that were free flying (i.e., “wild group”) and those kept within a confined enclosure (“captive group”). We found that 60% of the

Abstract Blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) can detect decomposing remains and begin colonizing the resource through oviposition soon after. The estimated time between colonization and insect evidence collection is referred to as the time of colonization (TOC). Forensic entomologists use the TOC to help estimate the minimum postmortem interval (mPMI),

Species Diversity and Relative Abundance of Medically Importance Flies in Golestan Province, 2018-19
Background & aim: Flies are important in the region in terms of mechanical transmission of pathogens, sciatica and forensic entomological research. Identification of species in different regions is the first and most important way to control vector ...

Biological Flora of Britain and Ireland: Silene uniflora‡
Sea Campion (Silene uniflora) flowers throughout the summer on cliffs, dunes and shingle, mainly around the Atlantic and Baltic coasts of Europe. Plants may have hermaphrodite flowers, female‐only flowers or both. Long‐tongued Hymenoptera and night‐flying moths are important pollinators, and they commonly also transmit a castrating fungal disease ...

Resilin in Insect Flight Systems
The development of resilin‐based biomaterials for medical and industrial applications has been constantly advanced in recent years. Resilin is a rubber‐like protein that occurs in arthropod exoskeleton structures. In the insect flight system, its function depends on its overall location, protein sequence and mixture with stiffer exoskeleton components.
