Louse Populations of the Northern Fur Seal (Callorhinus ursinus)

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1972
SUMMARY Infestations, density, and structure of populations, distribution, and transmission of the sucking lice, Proechinophthirus fluctus (Ferris) and Antarctophthirus callorhini (Osborn), found on the northern fur seal, Callorhinus ursinus, were studied.

Dental and Temporomandibular Joint Pathology of the Northern Fur Seal (Callorhinus ursinus)

Journal of Comparative Pathology, 2015
Skulls from 145 northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) were examined macroscopically according to predefined criteria. The museum specimens were acquired from strandings along the west coast of the USA between 1896 and 2008. Seventy-one skulls (49.0%) were from male animals, 56 (38.6%) from female animals and 18 (12.4%) from animals of unknown sex ...

BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL FLORA OF WILD NORTHERN FUR SEALS (CALLORHINUS URSINUS)

Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1982
Tissues from healthy subadult and moribund newborn northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) on St. Paul Island, Pribilof Islands, Alaska, and from healthy pups and yearlings on San Miguel Island, California, were sampled for bacteria and fungi. Corynebacterium spp. and Staphylococcus spp. were more frequently present in tissues from animals on St. Paul

Serum and colostrum immunoglobulin levels in the Northern Fur Seal Callorhinus ursinus

Developmental & Comparative Immunology, 1979
Abstract IgG, IgM, and IgA were measured in the serum and colostrum of adult and immature Northern Fur Seals ( Callorhinus ursinus ). Levels of these immunoglobulin classes in adults were comparable to those in terrestrial mammals. However, maternal transfer of immunoglobulin to neonatal pups either transplacentally or via the colostrum was low.

[Sleep and wakefulness in Callorhinus ursinus].

Zhurnal vysshei nervnoi deiatelnosti imeni I P Pavlova, 1984
Sleep and wakefulness of northern fur seals were studied on three subadult bulls carrying the implanted electrodes for recording the electrocorticogram of the two hemispheres, the neck electromiogram, the electrooculogram and the electrocardiogram. The active wakefulness accounted for 32.0 +/- 5.3% of total recording time, the relaxed wakefulness -31.7

Natal site fidelity in northern fur seals,Callorhinus ursinus

Animal Behaviour, 1995
More than 37 000 records of northern fur seals tagged at their natal areas and resighted during a recent mark-recapture study and past commercial harvests, were analysed to study the age and sex variation, and temporal dynamics of natal site fidelity in this highly polygynous, long-lived, migratory species.

LESIONS ASSOCIATED WITH Orthohalarachne attenuata (Halarachnidae) IN THE NORTHERN FUR SEAL (Callorhinus ursinus)

Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1976
In northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) up to at least 4 years of age there is virtually 100% prevalence of infestation with the nasal mite Orthohalarachne attenuata. Although clinical observations and gross examination indicate that the condition is not serious, some erosion and inflammation of the nasal turbinates and nasopharynx were seen ...

Identification and characterization of three immunoglobulin classes in the Northern Fur Seal Callorhinus ursinus

Developmental & Comparative Immunology, 1978
Abstract Three immunoglobulin classes were isolated and identified from serum pools and throat mucus of the Northern Fur Seal, Callorhinus ursinus . These classes were shown to cross-react with antigenic determinants of human IgM and IgA and porcine IgG.

FATTY ACID CONTENT OF DEPOT FAT IN THE NORTHERN FUR SEAL (Callorhinus ursinus)

Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1979
The fatty acid content of depot fat samples from 15 northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) were determined by gas-liquid chromatography. Callorhinus ursinus has a high proportion of short chain saturated acids: C10, C11, C12, C13, C15. Unsaturated longer chain acids C16:1, and C16:2, and C18:1 also were found.

Identification of constitutive androstane receptor cDNA in northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus)

Marine Environmental Research, 2004
Constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) plays a key role in the transcriptional regulation of CYP2B, 2C and 3A genes in response to phenobarbital, ortho-chlorine substituted polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and sex steroids in rodents and human. However, studies addressing CAR are limited to certain laboratory animals and cell lines, and there is little
