Modeling of ocean‐induced ice melt rates of five west Greenland glaciers over the past two decades

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
High‐resolution, three‐dimensional simulations from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model ocean model are used to calculate the subaqueous melt rate of the calving faces of Umiamako, Rinks, Kangerdlugssup, Store, and ...

Effect of butorphanol in combination with xylazine during castration of calves: A randomised trial under field conditions

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background In horses, cats and dogs, the opioid butorphanol has been proven effective in management of visceral pain and for peri‐ and postoperative pain relief. The aim of this study was to evaluate physiological responses and indicators of noxious stimuli when adding butorphanol to xylazine for sedation of bull calves during surgical ...

Non-linear glacier response to calving events, Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2019
Jakobshavn Isbræ, a tidewater glacier that produces some of Greenland's largest icebergs and highest speeds, reached record-high flow rates in 2012 (Joughin and others, 2014).

Pathophysiology of Diarrhea in Calves

open access: yesVeterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 2009
Infectious diarrhea in calves is most commonly associated with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, Cryptosporidium parvum, rotavirus, coronavirus, or some combination of these pathogens. Each of these agents leads to diarrhea through either secretion or malabsorption/maldigestion, though the specific mechanisms and pathways may differ.

Assessment of current colostrum feeding practices and passive transfer of immunity in dairy herds in Great Britain: A cross‐sectional study

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Updated targets for measuring transfer of passive immunity (TPI) at the herd level have been suggested, but the current performance of dairy herds in Great Britain is unknown. Methods A cross‐sectional study was performed. Serum total protein (STP) data collected between October 2022 and October 2023 by 21 veterinary practices were ...

Glacier calving observed with time-lapse imagery and tsunami waves at Glaciar Perito Moreno, Patagonia

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2018
Calving plays a key role in the recent rapid retreat of glaciers around the world. However, many processes related to calving are poorly understood since direct observations are scarce and challenging to obtain.

Assessing veterinary students’ attitudes towards pain in cattle before and after final‐year clinical training

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Cattle only show subtle signs of pain, making pain assessment difficult. The approach to pain and the use of analgesics depend on the treating person's experience and opinions. Methods Bavarian veterinary students were asked to answer two identical questionnaires before and after 12 weeks of clinical training in a ruminant clinic. A
