Relationships between birth or calving seasons and first-lactation performance of Holstein cows in the Midwestern United States

open access: yesJDS Communications
The purpose of this study was to establish the effects of birth season on performance of first-lactation Holstein cows. Further analysis was conducted to determine if the impact of calving season was a more appropriate indicator. This study analyzed data

Effects of Prepartum Supplementation and Yeast Fermentation Products on the Progesterone‐Modulated Transfer of Passive Immunity in Bos indicus Cows

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Inadequate colostrum intake increases risks of calf morbidity and mortality. This study investigated the effects of prepartum and early postpartum supplementation and yeast fermentation products on late‐pregnant Bos indicus cows, and the role of progesterone in mediating passive immunity transfer.

Stable Isotope Composition of Skin Layers Confirms Trophic Differentiation of Baird's and Sato's Beaked Whales (Berardius spp.) in the Western North Pacific

open access: yesRapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, Volume 40, Issue 17, 15 September 2026.
ABSTRACT Rationale Closely related whale species can appear similar yet occupy distinct ecological niches. Sato's beaked whale (Berardius minimus) was only recently recognized as a separate species and was previously grouped with Baird's beaked whale (Berardius bairdii), limiting our understanding of their ecological differences.

The effect of calving season and age at calving on production traits of South African dairy cattle

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Animal Science, 2001
Lactation records of South African Holstein and Jersey cows were classified into six calving seasons and 18 age x lactation classes using several trials involving analysis of variance and estimation of fixed effects of calving age on test-day as well as 305-day yields.

Quantification of Heat and Salt Budgets in the Western Ross Ice Shelf Cavity and Polynya System

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 13, 16 July 2026.
Abstract The Ross Ice Shelf Polynya (RISP) is one of the primary production sites of the High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW), the precursor of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) that drives the lower limb of global meridional overturning circulation. Utilizing a multi‐platform historical data set gathered over the western Ross Sea continental shelf, this study

A spatial analysis workflow to derive landscape‐scale conservation management information from GPS‐monitored grazing livestock

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 3, July–September 2026.
This study presents a spatial analysis workflow for using satellite telemetry data to understand livestock movement and habitat selection in conservation grazing contexts, using GPS‐tracked cattle on the Purbeck Heaths National Nature Reserve as a case study.

Predicted genetic consequences of alternative population control strategies for North American plains bison in Yellowstone National Park

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 5, July 2026.
Management of bison in Yellowstone National Park under the available strategies that maintained ≥3,500 individuals (1:1 sex ratio), removed <40% of the population at a time and prioritized relatives for removal were predicted to maintain genetic variation at levels consistent with long‐term conservation (>95% of existing variation).

MILK PRODUCTIVITY OF COWS DEPENDING ON CALVING SEASON

open access: yesNiva Povolzhya
The study of the calving season of cows is very important from the point of view of animal selection and breeding. The purpose of our research was to investigate the effects of calving season on the milk productivity of cows. The studies were conducted in the separate subdivision "Training and Experimental Farm "Ramzay" of FSBEI HE Penza SAU" on ...

Density‐dependent habitat selection in plains bison

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 90, Issue 5, July 2026.
Using GPS collar data, we tested whether habitat selection of plains bison in Grasslands National Park, Canada, was density dependent. Bison selected for areas of high vegetation productivity far from human activity when population density was low and increased use of lower productivity habitat closer to disturbance as density increased.
