Studies on the vascular cambium [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
The nature of the vascular cambium is discussed and the length of the elements in the secondary xylem related to the division and elongation cycles of the cambial fusiform initials. Particular attention is given to the activities of the storeyed cambium. The ontogeny of the storeyed cambium is described for Hoheria angustifolia Raoul. (Malvaceae).

A Band Model of Cambium Development: Opportunities and Prospects

open access: yesForests, 2021
More than 60% of tree phytomass is concentrated in stem wood, which is the result of periodic activity of the cambium. Nevertheless, there are few attempts to quantitatively describe cambium dynamics.

The onset of cambium activity – A matter of agreement?

open access: yesDendrochronologia, 2005
The diffuse-porous maple and the ring-porous ash showed first cambium cell divisions after bud break contemporaneously in the second half of April. However, in the ash, a few cells scattered throughout the dormant cambium zone had already distinctly ...

Sector analysis reveals patterns of cambium differentiation in poplar stems [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Botany, 2018
We used sector analysis to study cambium development and dynamics and to test whether fundamental developmental and functional differences exist between cambial initials as true 'stem cells' and more differentiated mother cells.

Vascular cambium stem cells: past, present and future

open access: yesNew Phytologist
Secondary xylem and phloem originate from a lateral meristem called the vascular cambium that consists of one to several layers of meristematic cells. Recent lineage tracing studies have shown that only one of the cambial cells in each radial cell file ...

Structure and functions of the vascular cambium

Comptes Rendus de l'Académie des Sciences - Series III - Sciences de la Vie, 1999
Following a general outline on the functioning of the cambium, the authors review the data acquired over the last 20 years. The interest is focused on: i) the ultrastructural characteristics of the two kinds of initials; ii) the early structural, metabolic and molecular modifications occurring during the first stages of daughter cell differentiation ...

Regulation of Cambium Activity

2021
The continued widening of the plant axis is a result of cell division activity of the lateral vascular meristem, namely, the cambium and the differentiation of secondary vascular tissues. The cambium produces new cells that build the secondary xylem (the wood) and secondary phloem tissues which increase the thickness of stems and roots.
