Coherent manipulation of atomic qubits in optical micropotentials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We experimentally demonstrate the coherent manipulation of atomic states in far-detuned dipole traps and registers of dipole traps based on two-dimensional arrays of microlenses.

Halide‐Dependent Photoluminescence and Heavy‐Atom Effects in Low‐Melting Organic–Inorganic Manganese Halides

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Two pyridinium‐based ionic liquid templated hybrid manganese halides, (C4Py)2[MnCl4] and (C4Py)2[MnBr4], display similar bulk structures but show significantly different photoluminescence behaviors due to the bromine heavy‐atom effect. Their stable local Mn environments remain intact even in the molten state, allowing applications such as luminescence ...

Human interference with wildlife surveys: a case study from camera-trapping road underpasses in Costa Rica

open access: yesOryx
Camera traps are widely used to study wildlife. However, theft and vandalism are frequent, resulting in millions of dollars in financial losses and large data gaps in research.

Using remote cameras to measure seasonal molts

open access: yesEcosphere, 2020
Obtaining accurate data on seasonal timing of lifecycle events in the wild is critical for many aspects of ecological research. However, characterizing such phenological processes is difficult, expensive, and time consuming.

Reducing bias in density estimates for unmarked populations that exhibit reactive behaviour towards camera traps

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, 2023
Density estimates guide wildlife management, and camera traps are commonly used to estimate sizes of unmarked populations. Unfortunately, animals often alter their natural behaviour in the presence of camera traps, which may bias subsequent density ...

Speckle‐Engineered Upconversion Amplification in Nanoemulsion‐Templated Hydrogel Microdomes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Nanoemulsion‐confined PEGDA microdomes generate speckle‐like excitation fields that strongly amplify upconversion luminescence upon dehydration, enabling filter‐free visible readout with reversible on–off switching. DMD‐based lithography yields scalable, shape‐programmable arrays for moisture‐responsive displays and optical encryption.

Camera traps equipped with macro lenses as a tool for monitoring arboreal small mammals: a case study in an agroecosystem (NE Italy)

open access: yesNatural History Sciences
Despite their increasing use, camera traps as a monitoring tool for arboreal small mammals leave room for further improvements to increase their effectiveness.

Identification and Density Estimation of American Martens (Martes americana) Using a Novel Camera-Trap Method

open access: yesDiversity, 2016
Camera-traps are increasingly used to estimate wildlife abundance, yet few studies exist for small-sized carnivores or comparing efficacy against traditional methods.

Remote Camera and Trapping Survey of the Deep-water Shrimps Heterocarpus laevigatus and H. ensifer and the Geryonid Crab Chaceon granulatus in Palau [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Time-lapse remote photo-sequences at 73-700 m depth off Palau, Western Caroline Islands, show that the caridean shrimp Heterocarpus laevigatus tends to be a solitary animal, occurring below ~350 m, that gradually accumulates around bait sites over a ...

Habitat fragmentation and anthropogenic factors affect wildcat Felis silvestris silvestris occupancy and detectability on Mt Etna [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Knowledge of patterns of occupancy is crucial for planning sound biological management and for identifying areas which require paramount conservation attention.
