Modeling of Interconnected Flat Open-Channel Flow: Application to Inland Navigation Canals [PDF]

open access: greenLa Houille Blanche, 2018
Inland navigation networks are composed of several artificial canals, usually characterized by no slope. These canals are large-scale systems that can be accurately described by means of the nonlinear Saint-Venant partial differential equations. However, the lack of an analytical solution for these equations is one of the reasons why simplified models ...

Modeling and fault diagnosis of flat inland navigation canals [PDF]

open access: greenProceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part I: Journal of Systems and Control Engineering, 2018
This article regards the development of an analytical redundancy-based approach for detecting and isolating both sensor and actuator faults in flat inland navigation canals. Inland navigation networks are principally used for transport and are composed of many canalized natural rivers and artificial canals characterized by no slope.

Development of a hydro-environmental model for inland navigational canals [PDF]

open access: bronzeJournal of Hydroinformatics, 2013
Before railroad and lorry traffic became common, many canals were built for transportation purposes. Water quality in canals has become a major concern as maintenance of these historically active canals has declined. A generic canal model has been developed to simulate the hydro-environmental processes specifically relevant to inland navigational ...

Decentralized control of inland navigation networks with distributaries: Application to navigation canals in the north of France [PDF]

open access: green2017 American Control Conference (ACC), 2017
Inland navigation networks are large-scale systems with large dead times, nonlinearities and variable time delays. They are composed of interconnected reaches. The management goal is to maintain the water level of each reach around a certain value. In this paper, a decentralized control approach is addressed to fulfill this objective.

Water quality modeling for the Kennet and Avon Canal, a navigational canal in an inland catchment

open access: closed, 2010
The Kennet and Avon Canal in southern England is experiencing severe water quality problems caused by inorganic sediment and algae. These water quality problems are affecting the angling sport of fishermen downstream of the confluence of the canal with the River Kennet.

Environmental risk assessment of non‐native salmonid escapes from net pens in the Chilean Patagonia

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 15, Issue 1, Page 198-219, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Here, we review extensive information to estimate environmental risks from escaped non‐native salmonids based on the assessments of hazard, sensitivity and exposure of discrete water bodies in Chile. In 2020, the country harvested about 1 million tons salmonids from net pens located along 1500 km of highly biodiverse coastline.

Autonomous Port Navigation With Ranging Sensors Using Model-Based Reinforcement Learning [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the ASME 2023 42nd International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. Volume 5: Ocean Engineering. Melbourne, Australia. June 11-16, 2023. V005T06A072. ASME, 2023
Autonomous shipping has recently gained much interest in the research community. However, little research focuses on inland - and port navigation, even though this is identified by countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands as an essential step towards a sustainable future.
