As indicated above, in some cases the effects of retinoids appear to be species-specific. Although retinyl acetate and 4-HPR are ineffective in preventing mammary cancer induced by DMBA or occurring spontaneously in mice, these retinoids prevent carcinogen-induced mammary cancer in rats.

1in favour of lifestyle choices to prevent cancer seems to be based on the questionable premise that pollutants should be investigated individually for their ability to cause disease. This approach might work for tobacco smoke and other easily isolated causes with obvious eff ects that lend themselves well to epidemiological study.
