Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Pan-cancer detection of driver genes at the single-patient resolution

open access: yesGenome Medicine, 2021
Background Identifying the complete repertoire of genes that drive cancer in individual patients is crucial for precision oncology. Most established methods identify driver genes that are recurrently altered across patient cohorts. However, mapping these

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Basal MET phosphorylation is an indicator of hepatocyte dysregulation in liver disease

open access: yesMolecular Systems Biology
Chronic liver diseases are worldwide on the rise. Due to the rapidly increasing incidence, in particular in Western countries, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is gaining importance as the disease can develop into ...

A SIMPLI (Single-cell Identification from MultiPLexed Images) approach for spatially-resolved tissue phenotyping at single-cell resolution

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Current high-dimension imaging data analysis methods are technology-specific and require multiple tools, restricting analytical scalability and result reproducibility.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

The inherent fragility of collective proliferative control

open access: yesiScience
Summary: Tissues achieve and maintain their sizes through active feedback, whereby cells collectively regulate proliferation and differentiation to facilitate homeostasis and the ability to respond to disturbances.

ORF Capture-Seq as a versatile method for targeted identification of full-length isoforms

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Most human protein-coding genes are expressed as multiple isoforms. Here the authors present ORF Capture-seq that uses cloned ORFs as probes to capture and sequence full length transcript sequences.

Spatial-temporal dynamics of a microbial cooperative behavior resistant to cheating

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Bacteria often live in densely packed, spatially-structured communities; however, much of our understanding of their behavior stems from studies in liquid culture. Here, Monaco et al.
