In response to attachment to a surface, fungal cells produce biofilms, three-dimensional structures composed of cells surrounded by exopolymeric matrices. Surface attachment causes Candida albicans cells to enter a special physiological state in which they are highly resistant to antifungal drugs and express the drug efflux determinants CDR1, CDR2 and ...

Invasive Candida infections are becoming increasingly recognized in critically ill patients. These infections result in serious morbidity, can be life threatening, and are expensive to manage. Early suspicion of Candida infection and the use of timely and proper antifungal treatment can improve outcome.

Systemic candidosis is a disease of increasing incidence with a high mortality and no typical clinical picture (Gold, 1984). The mainstay of treatment is amphotericin B which has been associated with nephrotoxicity (de Repentigny & Reiss, 1984). Difficulties in diagnosis and treatment have led to the use of numerous different oral antifungal agents as ...

The review highlights current insights in the epidemiology, diagnosis and therapy of Candida peritonitis, focusing on complicated secondary and tertiary peritonitis.Candida peritonitis is still associated with poor prognosis. Antifungal prophylaxis is therefore recommended in patients with an overt risk profile for invasive candidiasis ...

CHROMagar Candida is a new differential culture medium that allows selective isolation of yeasts and simultaneously identifies colonies of Candida albicans, C. tropicalis, and C. krusei. We evaluated the use of this medium with 316 yeast isolates including 247 isolated directly on CHROMagar from clinical material.

Purulent pericarditis due to species of Candida is rare. Only seven cases were found in the literature. Described here is a man with Candida tropicalis colonization of the urinary bladder in whom C. tropicalis pericarditis later developed. Amphotericin B was given intravenously. The amphotericin B level in pericardial fluid was approximately 50 percent

Candida albicans is the most common occurring of the candida species found as a commensal on mucosal tissue of mother and child. As a pathogen it can cause a distressing fungal infection for both mother and baby, resulting in nipple and breast pain for the mother and feeding difficulties for the infant. Clinicians can often presume that these symptoms
