Immunotherapy in clinical canine leishmaniosis: a comparative update
Research in Veterinary Science, 2019Leishmaniosis due to Leishmania infantum is a complex infection that can affect both humans and dogs, and present a wide range of clinical signs and clinicopathological abnormalities. The conventional treatment of this disease is challenging due to the fact that complete parasitological cure commonly does not occur.

Risk of transmission of canine leishmaniosis in eastern Spain
Veterinary Record, 2005IN the Mediterranean area, human and canine visceral leishmaniosis is caused by the parasitic protozoan Leishmania infantum (Peters and Killick-Kendrick 1987). In Spain, 15 per cent or more of all dogs are seropositive in endemic areas (Molina and others 1994), and this is fairly typical of the situation in other countries of the Mediterranean basin ...

Serum ferritin and paraoxonase-1 in canine leishmaniosis
Comparative Immunology, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, 2014Ferritin and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) were measured in dogs experimentally infected by Leishmania infantum (during experimental infection and following treatment) and also in naturally-infected dogs which presented different degrees of proteinuria. Experimentally-infected dogs were monitored for 7 months post-infection, then treated for 3 months with ...

AgNOR Expression in Canine Visceral Leishmaniosis
2021One of the ways to assess cellular metabolism is through the AgNOR technique. Since NORs are related to protein synthesis, they are increased in number according to the increase in cell metabolism, which occurs when the cell enters the cell cycle. NORs are involved with active transcription during Leishmania spp infection and their activation can ...

Clinical efficacy and tolerance of miltefosine in the treatment of canine leishmaniosis
Parasitology Research, 2009The study was aimed to assess the efficacy and tolerance profiles of an oral administration miltefosine drug (Milteforan(R), Virbac) in dogs with natural leishmaniosis. In this multicentric open trial, 96 dogs were treated with the drug administered orally at a dose of 2 mg/kg body weight once a day for 28 days.

Advances in the pathogenesis of canine leishmaniosis: epidemiologic and diagnostic implications
Veterinary Dermatology, 2009AbstractCanine leishmaniosis caused byLeishmania infantum(Syn.L. chagasi) is an important zoonosis with a complex pathogenesis. Parasite transmission occurs via female sandflies that inject promastigotes into the skin of the host. The interaction between the parasite and skin immune system is influenced by the repeated infectious bites and the ...
