Crosstalk Correction in Atomic Force Microscopy

open access: yes, 2006
Commercial atomic force microscopes usually use a four-segmented photodiode to detect the motion of the cantilever via laser beam deflection. This read-out technique enables to measure bending and torsion of the cantilever separately.

Tailoring Functional Properties of Ti–Ni–Cu Shape Memory Alloy Thin Films for MEMS Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A comprehensive study of critical parameters required to develop well‐performing Ti–Ni–Cu thin film shape memory alloy microactuators is provided. Materials science and device integration aspects are integrated by addressing structural and physical relationships using complementary characterization techniques as well as a practical fabrication solution

Position and Mode Dependent Optical Detection Back-Action in Cantilever Beam Resonators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Optical detection back-action in cantilever resonant or static detection presents a challenge when striving for state-of-the-art performance. The origin and possible routes for minimizing optical back-action have received little attention in literature ...

Hot‐Film and Calorimetric Methods With Transient Heating for Measurement of High Biofluid Flow Rate

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Accurate measurement of biofluid flow rate is vital for clinical diagnostics. We propose a transient heating strategy using short thermal pulses and peak temperature tracking to enhance the flow sensitivity of the hot‐Film and calorimetric methods. Simulations show how optimal heating time maximizes sensitivity across flow rates.

Parallel optical readout of a cantilever array in dynamic mode [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In this work we present parallel optical readout of a cantilever array which operates in dynamic mode using a standard optical beam deflection configuration containing only one laser-detector pair.

SRRs Embedded with MEMS Cantilevers to Enable Electrostatic Tuning of the Resonant Frequency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
A microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) cantilever array was monolithically fabricated in the gap region of a split ring resonator (SRR) to enable electrostatic tuning of the resonant frequency. The design consisted of two concentric SRRs each with a set

Control of Polarization and Polar Helicity in BiFeO3 by Epitaxial Strain and Interfacial Chemistry

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In BiFeO3 thin films, the interplay of interfacial chemistry, electrostatics, and epitaxial strain is engineered to stabilize homohelicity in polarization textures at the domain scale. The synergistic use of a Bi2O2‐terminated Aurivillius buffer layer and a highly anisotropic compressive epitaxial strain offers new routes to control the polar‐texture ...

Active vibration optimal control of piezoelectric cantilever beam with uncertainties

open access: yesMeasurement + Control, 2022
Considering the stiffness characteristics of piezoelectric layer, the bending stiffness of piezoelectric cantilever beam is obtained by applying the first-order shear deformation theory.
