Human density modulates spatial associations among tropical forest terrestrial mammal species

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 28, Issue 24, Page 7205-7216, December 2022., 2022
We assess 1,216 species pairs in 13 protected tropical forests around the world to ask: How do broad‐scale environmental and anthropogenic factors predict mammal interspecific spatial associations based on ecological similarity. This question provides insight into potential changes in species interaction, ecosystem functions, and extinction risk in ...

Representative identification of spectra and environments (RISE) using k‐means

open access: yesProgress in Photovoltaics: Research and Applications, Volume 29, Issue 2, Page 200-211, February 2021., 2021
We present a classification method for solar spectra, defining 18 representative spectra to reproduce the spectral impact on energy yield for various solar cell technologies and locations. We implement the spectrum set with an LED IV tester to capture spectral impacts experimentally.

Scientific shortcomings in environmental impact statements internationally

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 2, Issue 2, Page 369-379, June 2020., 2020
Abstract Governments around the world rely on environmental impact assessment (EIA) to understand the environmental risks of proposed developments. To examine the basis for these appraisals, we examine the output of EIA processes in jurisdictions within seven countries, focusing on scope (spatial and temporal), mitigation actions and whether impacts ...

Dihydrocaffeic Acid Prevents UVB‐Induced Oxidative Stress Leading to the Inhibition of Apoptosis and MMP‐1 Expression via p38 Signaling Pathway

open access: yesOxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
Chronic UVB exposure promotes oxidative stress, directly causes molecular damage, and induces aging‐related signal transduction, leading to skin photoaging. Dihydrocaffeic acid (DHCA) is a phenolic compound with potential antioxidant capacity and is thus a promising compound for the prevention of UVB‐induced skin photodamage.

Characterization of the Buccula, Rostrum, Stridulatory Sulcus, Scutellum, and External Female Genitalia of Triatoma carcavalloi (Jurberg, Rocha & Lent, 1998), Triatoma circummaculata (Stål, 1859), and Triatoma rubrovaria (Blanchard, 1843) (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae)

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
In Brazil, Triatoma rubrovaria (Blanchard, 1843) is the most important species in epidemiological terms in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, due to its wide geographical distribution in this state, followed by T. carcavalloi (Jurberg, Rocha & Lent, 1998) and T. circummaculata (Stål, 1859).

Does the Polymorphism in the Length of the Polyalanine Tract of FOXE1 Gene Influence the Risk of Thyroid Dysgenesis Occurrence?

open access: yesJournal of Thyroid Research, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
Background. Recent data have suggested that polymorphisms in the length of the polyalanine tract (polyA) of FOXE1 gene may act as a susceptibility factor for thyroid dysgenesis. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of polyA of FOXE1 gene on the risk of thyroid dysgenesis. Method. A case‐control study was conducted in a sample
