Clearing faults near shunt capacitor banks

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1990
Fault interrupting tests on high-voltage circuit breakers confirmed the problems of breaking a short-circuit current, which can occur in substations with shunt capacitor banks. Research was conducted on the behavior of different extinguishing media. Tests show that all types of circuit breakers (including the restrike-free breakers) have reignitions ...

Design of Rectangular Current Capacitor Banks

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1972
The design equations for a capacitor bank current source capable of producing an essentially flat-top, kilo-ampere-range current pulse having a duration of the order of tens of microseconds are presented. Magnitude, rise time, duration, and droop of the pulse are considered.

Capacitor bank storage

1994
The power transformation (extraction) system for capacitor bank storage is practically the same as for chemical storage. It uses a thyristor-based AC/DC convenor and all the relevant devices: AC transformer, reactive power sources, etc. A circuit schematic for a PTS is shown in the chapter.

Heat transfer model for capacitor banks

Conference Record of 1998 IEEE Industry Applications Conference. Thirty-Third IAS Annual Meeting (Cat. No.98CH36242), 2002
The life expectancy of aluminum electrolytic capacitors used for DC bus filtering in motor drives depends upon their operating temperature. This paper discusses convection and radiation heat transfer from capacitor banks and presents a heat transfer model for banks of capacitors that can be used to estimate temperature rise.

Bridge capacitor bank design and operation

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1996
The concept of a bridge capacitor bank installation was presented in a previous paper (see N.G. Andrei et. al., IEEE Trans. Power Systems, vol.8, no.4, p.1463-70, 1993). This paper discusses design and operation aspects related to the installation of a bridge capacitor bank in a substation.

A multiplexed switched capacitor filter bank

IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, 1980
A technique is introduced which allows several integrator capacitors to be multiplexed onto a single operational amplifier. As a result, the op amp can be shared by several switched capacitor filter channels, drastically reducing the number of op amps required for filter banks.

High current pulse forming by modularized capacitor banks

IEEE Conference Record - Abstracts. PPPS-2001 Pulsed Power Plasma Science 2001. 28th IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science and 13th IEEE International Pulsed Power Conference (Cat. No.01CH37255), 2001
Summary form only given, as follows. Eight 300 kJ modularized capacitor-banks have been constructed and tested. These modules are to be used as a driver of an electro-thermal chemical (ETC) gun. Each capacitor bank has six 22 kV, 50 kJ capacitors connected in parallel.

Switched-Capacitor Power Converters With Soft Charging via Auxiliary Capacitor Bank

2019 IEEE 62nd International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS), 2019
This paper presents a circuit solution for increasing the efficiency of switched-capacitor power converters utilizing a soft charging technique. The technique is based on an auxiliary capacitor bank that reduces the energy losses associated with parasitic capacitances.

Determining settings for capacitor bank protection

2010 63rd Annual Conference for Protective Relay Engineers, 2010
As the electric power grid is pushed to its limits, efficiencies can be gained by properly using shunt capacitor banks. Protective relaying must be provided for these banks that will protect the system from abnormal conditions that could be caused by the capacitor bank as well as provide protection to the capacitor bank from abnormal conditions caused ...

Application of Coaxial Cable Lengths for Capacitor Protection in Large Capacitors Banks

IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, 2004
The results of research into the possibility to use coaxial cable lengths for protection of capacitors in large capacitor banks are presented. The pulsed current value permissible for cables in normal operation is estimated in view of the strength of the outer conductors under the action of electrodynamic forces.
