Capacitor Bank Balancing

2021 IEEE/IAS 57th Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Technical Conference (I&CPS), 2021
High voltage (HV) capacitor banks are constructed using combinations of series and parallel capacitor units to meet the required voltage and kvar requirements. These capacitor banks utilize protective relays which will trip the bank when problems are detected.

Precision Capacitor Bank

2007 IEEE 34th International Conference on Plasma Science (ICOPS), 2007
Summary form only given. High voltage capacitor banks may be required to deliver precise amounts of energy to the load. Various industrial and scientific systems including lasers, magnets and flash lamps may require precise and repeatable energy delivery. This paper discusses the design of capacitor banks to meet these requirements.

Reliability Calculations for Capacitor Banks

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1983
The reliability of high voltage power capacitor banks has been analyzed using a statistical model based on the failure intensity of the single capacitor element. The expected lifetime of the bank is obtained by computer simulation of element failure sequences leading to bank failure according to a preselected criterion.

Fuseless capacitor banks

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1992
A fuseless capacitor bank construction is described. Before the first fuseless capacitor bank, engineering tests were performed to ensure that the fuseless concept was sound. Testing of faulted units included: continuous current, capacitor switching, and capacitor losses (power factor).

Switching High-Voltage Shunt Capacitor Banks

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1951
ONE OF THE first 34.5-kv capacitor banks in this country was installed recently on the Indianapolis Power and Light Company system. This capacitor bank, totaling 7,290 kva, was part of a system program of adding reactive generation close to reactive load in the most practical and economical manner. See Figures 1 and 2.

Protection of large capacitor banks

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1983
Large capacitor banks, as used in many pulsed plasma experiments, are subject to catastrophic failure in the event of a short in the output or in an individual capacitor. Methods are described for minimizing the damage and down time caused by such a failure.
