Model-Based Design and Optimization of Hybrid DC-Link Capacitor Banks [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2020
For the applications where a single capacitor is incapable to meet the needs, multiple capacitors are connected in series or in parallel as a bank to fulfill the capacitance and voltage rating requirements.

Continuous monitoring of a capacitor bank

IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Magazine, 2001
We have developed a prototype system for safety assurance of a capacitor bank by combining application-specific and off-the-shelf surveillance technology for remote monitoring. Traditional surveillance technology passively records facility operations, waiting for an event to trigger a physical audit of the collected information.

Thermal Modeling of an Electrolytic Capacitor Bank

2020 IEEE 21st Workshop on Control and Modeling for Power Electronics (COMPEL), 2020
This paper proposes a capacitor bank thermal impedance model considering the coupling between capacitors. FEM simulations and experimental characterizations are performed on 450 V/5.3 mF electrolytic capacitors. The comparative results verify the effectiveness of the proposed thermal model.

A primer on capacitor bank protection

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2001
Capacitor banks are applied in power systems to provide reactive power. The reactive power results in lower current in lines upstream of the bank improving system voltage and power factor and reducing line losses. Capacitor banks can be configured as filters for harmonic reduction.

Protection of large capacitor banks

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1983
Large capacitor banks, as used in many pulsed plasma experiments, are subject to catastrophic failure in the event of a short in the output or in an individual capacitor. Methods are described for minimizing the damage and down time caused by such a failure.

Multi-objective Optimization of Capacitor Bank Considering the Parasitic Parameters of Capacitors

8th Renewable Power Generation Conference (RPG 2019), 2019
For the applications where a single capacitor is incapable to meet the needs, different types, behaviors and specifications of capacitors can be packaged as a capacitor bank to fulfill the requirements of the systems. Even though some commercial capacitor bank products have already existed in the market, most of them are the experienced based design ...

A study of capacitor element failures in high voltage Shunt Capacitor Banks

2017 IEEE 30th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE), 2017
Internal failures in Shunt Capacitor Bank (SCB) units render trips from unbalance protection to prevent from further damage to the equipment. Fuseless and internally fused capacitor cans are the dominant technologies in power capacitor design, which do not provide external indication for units with failed elements.

Auxiliary Digital Control Unit for Capacitor Banks

2019
This paper addresses the conception of a prototype based in an implementation of a microcontroller proposed as an alternative solution to programmable logic controllers for controlling a capacitor bank. The control considered is in accordance with the Portuguese Energy Services Regulatory Authority.

Switching High-Voltage Shunt Capacitor Banks

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1951
ONE OF THE first 34.5-kv capacitor banks in this country was installed recently on the Indianapolis Power and Light Company system. This capacitor bank, totaling 7,290 kva, was part of a system program of adding reactive generation close to reactive load in the most practical and economical manner. See Figures 1 and 2.

Switched-Capacitor Power Converters With Soft Charging via Auxiliary Capacitor Bank

2019 IEEE 62nd International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems (MWSCAS), 2019
This paper presents a circuit solution for increasing the efficiency of switched-capacitor power converters utilizing a soft charging technique. The technique is based on an auxiliary capacitor bank that reduces the energy losses associated with parasitic capacitances.
