Capacitor Voltage Ripple Suppression of the Switched Capacitor Modular Multilevel Converter

2021 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (ECCE), 2021
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is the most promising topology for the medium/high-voltage applications. Recently, a novel type of switched-capacitor MMC (SCMMC) has been proposed, which has inherent capacitor voltage balancing function and higher power density.

Capacitor voltage ripple minimization in modular multilevel converters

2015 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT), 2015
Modular multilevel converters provide high power quality, high reliability and flexible voltage and power scalability. However, large capacitor voltage ripple is one of the main drawbacks of this topology. This ripple reduces the capacitor lifetime and, due to the large capacitance required to limit it, increases the size and cost of the converter.

Minimization of Switched Capacitor Voltage Ripple in a Multilevel Dodecagonal Voltage Space Vector Structure for Drives

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2020
A multilevel dodecagonal voltage space vector generation scheme for variable-speed drive applications with single-dc-link operation requires a large value of capacitance for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) filters, when operated at lower speeds. In existing schemes, the multilevel dodecagonal structure is obtained by cascading a flying capacitor inverter with ...

Capacitor Voltage Ripple Minimization in Voltage Source Converter for HVDC Applications

2019 AEIT HVDC International Conference (AEIT HVDC), 2019
In this paper an exhaustive study on the effects of the circulating currents in the modular multilevel converter in HVDC applications is presented. In the first part, an analytical study of the converter is reported, with emphasis on the capacitors voltage ripple in presence of different circulating currents.

Impact of Circulating Currents on Capacitor Voltage Ripple and Losses in MMCs

2020 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2020
This paper characterizes the impact of second-harmonic circulating currents on the capacitor voltage ripple and losses in a modular multilevel converter. A control method is then developed to minimize the capacitor voltage ripple or losses of the converter by manipulating the arm voltage references so that judicious amounts of circulating currents that

A low‐ripple switched‐capacitor voltage regulator with decoupling capabilities

International Journal of Numerical Modelling: Electronic Networks, Devices and Fields, 2017
AbstractIn this paper, a switched‐capacitor voltage regulator with a very low output ripple and decoupling capability is presented. To implement this regulator, a dual‐phase, double fly capacitors configuration is proposed. Besides having a very low output ripple, it is demonstrated how it is very effective in suppressing power input noise as well, for

Analysis of DC-Link Voltage Ripple in Voltage Source Inverters without Electrolytic Capacitor

IECON 2018 - 44th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2018
In this paper, the DC-link voltage ripple is analyzed for an inverter without electrolytic capacitor. As the capacitance density of non-electrolytic capacitors are significantly lower than electrolytic capacitors, for a non-electrolytic capacitor based three-phase inverter, the DC-link voltage ripple is much higher than traditional inverter, which will

Voltage ripple across the capacitor in DC side of shunt APF

2012 IEEE International Conference on Power System Technology (POWERCON), 2012
Active Power Filter (APF) is an important power electronic device to compensate the load harmonic current so as to improve power quality of the system. Stability of voltage across the capacitor in DC side of APF is one of the key factors which determine the compensation effect. Therefore voltage ripple should be controlled within allowed range.

Low-Capacitance Modular Multilevel Converter Operating With High Capacitor Voltage Ripples

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2019
To provide a reliable approach that can significantly decrease energy storage requirements, this paper proposes a low-capacitance modular multilevel converter (MMC) operating with high capacitor voltage ripples. In the proposed MMC with high ripples (HR-MMC), the dc value of the capacitor voltage is slightly decreased by slightly increasing the number ...
