Identification and Validation of Genus/Species-Specific Short InDels in Dairy Ruminants

open access: yesBMC Veterinary Research
Background Over the past thirty years, the identification of species-specific molecular markers has significantly advanced our understanding of genetic diversity in both plants and animals. Among these, short InDels have emerged as vital genomic features,

Aspectos morfométricos de Haemonchus contortus (Rudolphi, 1803) procedentes de caprinos (Capra hircus) da região semiárida do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil

open access: yesArquivos do Instituto Biológico
No nordeste brasileiro, Haemonchus contortus é considerado um nematódeo gastrintestinal de grande relevância médico-veterinária, por causar queda de produção, atraso no desenvolvimento, perdas econômicas e mortes de pequenos ruminantes.

Smart Ungulates: What Sheep and Goats' Performances in a Reversed‐Reward Contingency Task Tell Us About the Evolution of Cognitive Flexibility

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
This study shows that young goats outperform sheep in the reversed‐reward contingency task, which is a cognitive test requiring both inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility. The results highlight the importance of cognitive flexibility when solving this type of task, and suggest that the differences between both species may reflect social and ...

Drivers of Hirola Antelope Diet Selection in Natural and Managed Habitat in Eastern Kenya

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2026.
Hirola (Beatragus hunteri) populations in eastern Kenya consumed 17 forage species, favoring the grass Chloris virgata and the forbs Commelina benghalensis and C. diffusa. Nutrient analyses showed that natural habitats offered higher phosphorus, magnesium, and digestibility, whereas managed sites provided more sodium, potassium, and crude protein, with

Morphogenesis of Rumen in Goat (Capra hircus) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Anatomy, 2015
Gross anatomical features of develop- ing rumen was studied in 36 goat foeti of both sex. The primordia of the ru- men was noticed on 38 day of gestation between 11th to 13th rib. Rumen was displaced from 8th rib to 1st lum- bar vertebrae on 134 day onwards. It was roughly quadrilateral shaped through- out the gestation.

Trait‐mediated effects driven by an invasive herbivore alter functionally diverse plant–frugivore interactions

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 1, Page 216-228, January 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Fruit traits play a fundamental role in mediating plant‐frugivore interactions, shaping seed dispersal dynamics. Given the complexity of multi‐species interactions, these traits and, consequently, plant‐frugivore interactions can be indirectly influenced by third‐party ...

Morphological measurements and body indices for Cuban Creole goats and their crossbreds

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2011
In this work, linear body measures were taken and production indices calculated for 100 Cuban Creole goats and 100 crossbred goats in order to aid in the characterization of animal genetic resources in Cuba. Low variation was found for all indices of the

Native and Alien Ungulates in North America: Potential for Restoring Herbivore Diversity and Functions

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 35, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Large herbivores play key roles in ecosystems by promoting plant diversity, dispersing seeds, regulating nutrient cycling, and shaping vegetation structure. Since the Late Pleistocene, their declines have led to profound ecosystem changes. While often viewed as problematic, alien herbivores may partly compensate for these losses; yet their
