Deflection circuit monitors force on object under water [PDF]

open access: yes, 1968
Capsule containing samples for radiation testing is guided under through a seal to an exact position within a nuclear reactor. A Linear Variable Differential Transformer /LVDT/ flexplate deflection circuit monitors the force on the capsule as it is ...

Towards a micropositioning system for targeted drug delivery in wireless capsule endoscopy

open access: yes, 2011
This paper describes a novel micropositioning mechanism for achieving 1ml of targeted drug delivery within wireless capsule endoscopes. The mechanism allows a needle to be positioned within a 22.5° segment of a cylindrical capsule and be extendible by up

The Regulation of Trace Metal Elements in Cancer Ferroptosis

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The induction of ferroptosis inhibits tumor growth, enhances anticancer efficacy, and overcomes drug resistance. Recent evidence shows nonferrous metal elements play a role in ferroptosis. This review focuses on how trace metals regulate ferroptosis processes like iron accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant defense.

Microphysiological Glomerular Filtration Barriers: Current Insights, Innovations, and Future Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
The glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) is the first step of blood filtration by the kidneys. The concerning increase of kidney diseases makes the development of new models essential. In this context, microphysiological glomerular filtration barriers focus on closely reproducing the physiological architecture of the in vivo GFB: podocytes, glomerular ...

Impact of contusion injury on intramuscular emm1 group a streptococcus infection and lymphatic spread

open access: yesVirulence, 2018
Invasive group A Streptococcus (iGAS) is frequently associated with emm1 isolates, with an attendant mortality of around 20%. Cases occasionally arise in previously healthy individuals with a history of upper respiratory tract infection, soft tissue ...

Cryptococcus neoformans: Diagnostic Dilemmas, Electron Microscopy and Capsular Variants

open access: yesTropical Medicine and Infectious Disease, 2018
Two cases of cryptococcal meningitis went undetected by a cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) lateral flow assay on blood in a reflex CrAg screen-and-treat programme in South Africa, although Cryptococcus neoformans was identified by culturing the cerebrospinal ...

Capsule endoscopy

open access: yesWorld Journal of Gastroenterology, 2009
Capsule endoscopy (CE) is a simple, safe, non-invasive, reliable technique, well accepted and tolerated by the patients, which allows complete exploration of the small intestine. The advent of CE in 2000 has dramatically changed the diagnosis and management of many diseases of the small intestine, such as obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, Crohn's ...

Investigating the Cellular Effects of GALC Dosing in Enzyme Replacement Therapy for Krabbe Disease Supports the Role of Nanomedicine

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, EarlyView.
A detailed workflow for recombinant GALC production and characterization is presented to support enzyme replacement therapy for Krabbe disease. In vitro assays demonstrate that physiological GALC doses restore enzymatic activity and autophagic flux without affecting cell viability, whereas higher doses impair autophagy and reduce viability.

Bacillus anthracis Factors for Phagosomal Escape

open access: yesToxins, 2012
The mechanism of phagosome escape by intracellular pathogens is an important step in the infectious cycle. During the establishment of anthrax, Bacillus anthracis undergoes a transient intracellular phase in which spores are engulfed
