Eliciting diverse perspectives to prioritize community actions for biodiversity conservation

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Communities have a strong role in protecting biodiversity. In addition to participation in restoration, a range of actions in the public or private sphere may support biodiversity. Despite this, there is a lack of clarity about what actions should be prioritized for behavior change campaigns.

Moderate and extreme warming under a varied resource supply alter the microzooplankton–phytoplankton coupling in North Sea coastal communities

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 69, Issue 12, Page 2991-3002, December 2024.
Abstract Rising temperature is one of the most visible effects of global change on Earth; however, it is barely known how moderate or extreme warming events impact the trophic interactions and the energy transfer in food webs. Combining a mesocosm approach and two‐point dilution incubations, we quantified how natural plankton assemblages respond to ...

Soil carbon and nitrogen cycling at the atmosphere–soil interface: Quantifying the responses of biocrust–soil interactions to global change

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2024.
Despite the critical role of biological soil crusts (biocrusts) in dryland C and N cycles, little is known about how biocrust‐derived C and N move into the soil. This study reveals how biocrusts facilitate the downward movement of C and N and drive the formation of mineral‐associated organic matter in subcrust soils.

Growth parameters, phytochemicals, and antitumor activity of wild and cultivated ice plants (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.)

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 12, Issue 9, Page 6548-6562, September 2024.
Growth, phytochemicals, and antitumor activity of the ice plant were assessed. α‐Linolenic acid (18:3n‐3) was significantly higher in wild than in cultivated plants. Higher salinity levels led to increased total carotenoids in cultivated plants. Selected light treatments increased phenolic content and fresh plant mass.

Genomic, morphological and physiological data support fast ecotypic differentiation and incipient speciation in an alpine diving beetle

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 17, September 2024.
Abstract An intricate interplay between evolutionary and demographic processes has frequently resulted in complex patterns of genetic and phenotypic diversity in alpine lineages, posing serious challenges to species delimitation and biodiversity conservation planning. Here we integrate genomic data, geometric morphometric analyses and thermal tolerance

The experimental implications of the rate of temperature change and timing of nutrient availability on growth and stoichiometry of a natural marine phytoplankton community

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 69, Issue 8, Page 1769-1781, August 2024.
Abstract Climate change increases the need to understand the effect of predicted future temperature and nutrient scenarios on marine phytoplankton. However, experimental studies addressing the effects of both drivers use a variety of design approaches regarding their temperature change rate and nutrient supply regimes.
