Proton Beam Therapy and Carbon Ion Radiotherapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Seminars in Radiation Oncology, 2018
Charged particle therapy with proton beam therapy (PBT) and carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) has emerged as a promising radiation modality to minimize radiation hepatotoxicity while maintaining high rates of tumor local control.

Patient handling system for carbon ion beam scanning therapy [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, 2012
Our institution established a new treatment facility for carbon ion beam scanning therapy in 2010. The major advantages of scanning beam treatment compared to the passive beam treatment are the following: high dose conformation with less excessive dose to the normal tissues, no bolus compensator and patient collimator/ multi‐leaf collimator, better ...

Physical and biological beam modeling for carbon beam scanning at Osaka Heavy Ion Therapy Center

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, 2021
AbstractWe have developed physical and biological beam modeling for carbon scanning therapy at the Osaka Heavy Ion Therapy Center (Osaka HIMAK). Carbon beam scanning irradiation is based on continuous carbon beam scanning, which adopts hybrid energy changes using both accelerator energy changes and binary range shifters in the nozzles.

Diamond detectors for the monitoring of carbon-ion therapy beams

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2010
Over the last few years a significant improvement in the production of single-crystal diamonds produced by Chemical Vapour Deposition (sc-CVD) has been made. Since the availability of the so called 'detector-grade' diamond material, we have worked on its application within the framework of the heavy-ion beam therapy. In this paper a study of the sc-CVD

Computer-Assisted Treatment Planning Approaches for Carbon-Ion Beam Therapy

, 2017
In this chapter, we introduced the basic concept of the charged particle beam therapy from a physics point of view. Although treatment procedures for particle beam therapy are closely similar to those for the photon beam therapy, beam range (penetration depth) should be taken into account carefully in the particle beam therapy due to different ...

Tumour status prediction by means of carbon-ion beam irradiation: comparison of washout rates between in-beam PET and DCE-MRI in rats

Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2023
Objective. Tumour response to radiation therapy appears as changes in tumour vascular condition. There are several methods for analysing tumour blood circulatory changes one of which is dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI), but ...

A superconducting magnet for a beam delivery system for carbon ion cancer therapy

IEEE Transactions on Appiled Superconductivity, 2002
The therapy of cancer (hadrontherapy) with accelerated particle beams is an out coming method that allows an accurate and effective treatment of several kinds of tumors minimizing the irradiation of the surrounding tissues and avoiding intercepting vital organs.
