Galactic chemical abundance evolution in the solar neighborhood up to the Iron peak

open access: yes, 2000
We have developed a detailed standard chemical evolution model to study the evolution of all the chemical elements up to the iron peak in the solar vicinity.

Carbon Isotopes in Magmatic Systems: Measurements, Interpretations, and the Carbon Isotopic Signature of the Earth’s Mantle

open access: yesGeosciences
Carbon isotopes in magmatic systems serve as powerful tracers for understanding magma evolution, mantle processes, the deep carbon cycle, and the origin of Earth’s carbon.

Functionalized Lignin Derivatives as Melt‐Spinnable Precursors for Carbon Fiber Production without Stabilization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
By turning off hydrogen bonds by bulky ethyl cinnamate ester derivatization, softwood kraft lignin can flow under elevated temperatures, providing tough fiber in the melt for high take‐up speed. Subsequently, lignin ethyl cinnamate derivatives are readily stabilized with only dilute nitric acid leading to direct carbonized fiber with outstanding ...

Analytical modelling of stable isotope fractionation of volatile organic compounds in the unsaturated zone

open access: yes, 2011
Analytical models were developed that simulate stable isotope ratios of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) near a point source contamination in the unsaturated zone. The models describe diffusive transport of VOCs, biodegradation and source ageing.

Stable oxygen and carbon isotope compositional fields for skeletal and diagenetic components in New Zealand Cenozoic nontropical carbonate sediments and limestones: a synthesis and review [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
The stable oxygen isotope composition (d¹⁸O) of a precipitated carbonate depends mainly on the isotope composition, salinity, and temperature of the host fluid, whereas the stable carbon isotope composition (d¹³C) reflects the source of CO2 for ...

Tracing water sources of terrestrial animal populations with stable isotopes: laboratory tests with crickets and spiders. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
Fluxes of carbon, nitrogen, and water between ecosystem components and organisms have great impacts across levels of biological organization. Although much progress has been made in tracing carbon and nitrogen, difficulty remains in tracing water sources

Locations of marine animals revealed by carbon isotopes

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2011
Knowing the distribution of marine animals is central to understanding climatic and other environmental influences on population ecology. This information has proven difficult to gain through capture-based methods biased by capture location. Here we show

Bright Monocompound Metal Halide Scintillator for Fast Neutron Radiography

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Metal halide scintillator, tetraphenylphosphonium manganese bromide (TPP2MnBr4), provides a significant benefit for fast neutron imaging. A fourfold increase in efficiency over traditional zinc sulfide screens is achieved by efficiently utilizing neutron interactions within its homogeneous structure.
