Optimized Sugar Beet Seedling Growth via Coordinated Photosynthate Allocation and N Assimilation Regulation

open access: yesAgriculture
Sugar beet is a nitrogen (N)-sensitive crop, and its N regulation and utilization are critical for enhancing productivity. Sugar beet seedlings at the two-true-leaf-pair stage were hydroponically grown in an artificial climate chamber.

Macromolecular crowding explains overflow metabolism in cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Overflow metabolism is a metabolic phenotype of cells characterized by mixed oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) and fermentative glycolysis in the presence of oxygen.

Printed Integrated Logic Circuits Based on Chitosan‐Gated Organic Transistors for Future Edible Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Edible electronics needs integrated logic circuits for computation and control. This work presents a potentially edible printed chitosan‐gated transistor with a design optimized for integration in circuits. Its implementation in integrated logic gates and circuits operating at low voltage (0.7 V) is demonstrated, as well as the compatibility with an ...

Quantitative constraint-based computational model of tumor-to-stroma coupling via lactate shuttle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Cancer cells utilize large amounts of ATP to sustain growth, relying primarily on non-oxidative, fermentative pathways for its production.

Mechanically Tunable Bone Scaffolds: In Vivo Hardening of 3D‐Printed Calcium Phosphate/Polycaprolactone Inks

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 3D bone scaffold with osteogenic properties and capable of hardening in vivo is developed. The scaffold is implanted in a ductile state, and a phase transformation of the ceramic induces the stiffening and strengthening of the scaffold in vivo. Abstract Calcium phosphate 3D printing has revolutionized customized bone grafting.

The Zinc Finger Protein Mig1 Regulates Mitochondrial Function and Azole Drug Susceptibility in the Pathogenic Fungus Cryptococcus neoformans

open access: yesmSphere, 2016
The opportunistic pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans causes fungal meningoencephalitis in immunocompromised individuals. In previous studies, we found that the Hap complex in this pathogen represses genes encoding mitochondrial respiratory functions and ...

Medium alkalization due to carbon metabolism is largely responsible for inhibition of bacterial growth by Vibrio cholerae supernatants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Vibrio cholerae is the causative agent of the diarrheal disease cholera. Many Vibrio species secrete antimicrobial factors, though the identity of such a factor has not been determined for any V. cholerae strain.

Cryo‐EM of Rationally Designed Photosystem I Nanoassembly on Graphene Validates Orientation‐Driven Enhancement of Photocatalytic Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The first cryo‐EM visualization and quantification of oriented Photosystem I (PSI) on single‐layer graphene is reported. Domain‐specific covalent anchoring of PSI, with the reducing side of the biophotocatalyst toward graphene, promotes three‐fold higher anodic photocurrent generation compared to a randomly physisorbed counterpart. This approach allows
