Biochar application enhances ant (Formica japonica) ecological functions as indicated by their social behaviors

open access: yesBiochar
Soil fauna activity is crucial for soil ecosystem functioning and health, but soil remediation techniques, such as biochar application, are seldom examined for their influence on soil fauna activity.

Carbon sequestration partnerships [PDF]

open access: yesEos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 2003
The U.S. Department of Energy named seven regional partnerships on 16 August to study the best methods for the non‐biological sequestration of carbon in different parts of the country.DOE will provide about $11.1 million to these partnerships over the next 2 years, with participating organizations expected to contribute an additional $7 million.

Turning Unpredictable Biomolecule Adsorption to Controlled Corona Formation: Focus on Carbon Nanomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Controlling the protein corona formation onto carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) enhances their functionalities as platforms for cancer theranostics. Here, we reviewed the effects of the intrinsic and acquired properties of CNMs on protein corona formation, the consequent biological and toxicological outcomes, and the strategies to reshape corona formation ...

Leaftronics: Bio‐Fractal Scaffolds From Leaf Venation for Low‐Waste Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
“Leaftronics” transforms naturally evolved leaf venation into quasi‐fractal scaffolds for sustainable electronics. Polymer‐infiltrated leaf skeletons can be used to fabricate ultra‐smooth, reflow‐ and thin‐film‐compatible decomposable substrates, while making the same lignocellulose networks conducting results in flexible transparent electrodes.

Great SCO2T! Rapid tool for carbon sequestration science, engineering, and economics

open access: yes, 2020
CO2 capture and storage (CCS) technology is likely to be widely deployed in coming decades in response to major climate and economics drivers: CCS is part of every clean energy pathway that limits global warming to 2C or less and receives significant CO2

Modeling carbon biogeochemistry in agricultural soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
An existing model of C and N dynamics in soils was supplemented with a plant growth submodel and cropping practice routines (fertilization, irrigation, tillage, crop rotation, and manure amendments) to study the biogeochemistry of soil carbon in arable ...

Conductive Hydrogels for Exogenous Sensing and Cell Fate Control

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We engineer electrically conductive hydrogels by combining sulfated glycosaminoglycans with semiconducting polymers. These hydrogels bind bioactive proteins, including growth factors, whose release or retention can be modulated by low‐voltage stimulation. The hydrogels are also integrated as 3D channels in organic electrochemical transistors as part of
