Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Experimental investigation of calcium carbonate mineralogy in past and future oceans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Inorganic marine calcium carbonate formation and mineralogy varies significantly concurrent with the solution composition. During the Phanerozoic, due to oscillations in the seawater composition, this resulted in the formation of either dominantly ...

Stable prenucleation mineral clusters are liquid-like ionic polymers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Calcium carbonate is an abundant substance that can be created in several mineral forms by the reaction of dissolved carbon dioxide in water with calcium ions.

Study on Calcified Alkali Leaching of Vanadium-Extracted Tailings and Preparation of Barium Orthovanadate

open access: yesNanomaterials
While vanadium-extracted tailings contain valuable components, their utilization is difficult due to their high sodium content. In this work, a new oxygen-pressure calcification and alkaline leaching strategy to achieve barium orthovanadate vanadium ...

Co‐existence of skeletal and ooid shoals as a result of antecedent topography—Cat cay shoal complex, Bahamas

open access: yesThe Depositional Record, 2019
High‐resolution seismic data reveal an unexpected Pleistocene topography underneath the Cat Cay shoal complex along the western margin of Great Bahama Bank, illustrating how Pleistocene topography focuses tidal flow to create different types of ...

Three phosphatase families form a community: The phosphohydrolases that act upon inositol pyrophosphates

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.

Contrasting carbonate depositional systems for Pliocene cool-water limestones cropping out in central Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

open access: yes, 2004
Pliocene limestone formations in central Hawke's Bay (eastern North Island, New Zealand) accumulated on and near the margins of a narrow forearc basin seaway within the convergent Australia/Pacific plate boundary zone.

Discovery of the deep-sea NEOM Brine Pools in the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment, 2022
The sedimentary signals of climatic and tectonic events are preserved in pristine condition by the hypersaline environment within brine pools discovered by remote observations, and core and brine sampling, in the Gulf of Aqaba, off the Saudi Arabian ...
