During the Mesozoic, the southern part of the Apennine Peninsula (Apulia), the Istrian Peninsula, the Adriatic islands, and parts of the Outer Dinarides, all belonged to a single geotectonic unit - the Adriatic or Apulian plate. During the Early Jurassic, the Adriatic carbonate platform was established as an isolated intra-oceanic platform.
