Tomographic Reconstruction of Carboniferous Arthropods

open access: yes, 2011
Carboniferous fossils are often found as three-dimensional voids within siderite (FeCO3) nodules. Traditional techniques of study – splitting the host concretion and inspecting the surfaces revealed – do not allow the investigation of morphology within the part / counterpart, and prevent complete data recovery. X-ray micro-tomography (XMT) and 'virtual

Box Models of Volatile Cycles over the Entire Phanerozoic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Three stand-alone geochemical box models have been developed to simulate globally coupled biogeochemical cycles. These models reflect the evolution of the participating biotic and abiotic constituents in marine and terrestrial environments, including the

A Different Perspective on the Solid Lubrication Performance of Black Phosphorous: Friend or Foe?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Researchers investigate black phosphorous (BP) as a standalone solid lubricant coating through ball‐on‐disc linear‐reciprocating sliding experiments in dry conditions. Testing on different metals shows BP doesn't universally reduce friction and wear. However, it achieves 33% friction reduction on rougher iron surfaces and 23% wear reduction on aluminum.

Ancient karst at the eastern slope of the Middle Urals and the Early-Middle Carboniferous boundary

open access: yesЛитосфера, 2016
The paleokarst occurrences associated with Lower Carboniferous limestones in the east of the Middle Urals are considered. We analyse the nature of the Early-Middle Carboniferous boundary.

Consolidate Overview of Ribonucleic Acid Molecular Dynamics: From Molecular Movements to Material Innovations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Molecular dynamics simulations are advancing the study of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and RNA‐conjugated molecules. These developments include improvements in force fields, long‐timescale dynamics, and coarse‐grained models, addressing limitations and refining methods.

On British Carboniferous Brachiopoda [PDF]

open access: yesThe Geologist
Four years have elapsed since I first commenced my researches among the Carboniferous Brachiopoda of Great Britain ; and I should certainly by this time have completed my task, had not the unfortunate delay in the publication of the last two or three volumes of the Palæontographical Society induced me to undertake other work which would not require to ...

Deformation Behavior of La2O3‐Doped Copper during Equal Channel Angular Pressing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
By additions of strengthening elements and/or structure optimization, the mechanical properties of copper can be increased while keeping favorable electric conductivity. By combining addition of La2O3 and processing by equal channel angular pressing, substructure development is achieved, leading to increase in microhardness to more than double the ...

Potential for stratiform base-metal sulphides in SW England [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The British Geological Survey (BGS) has recently re-evaluated the potential for stratiform base-metal sulphide mineralisation in Devon and east Cornwall (Rollin et al., 2001) (Figure 1). On the basis of their stratigraphy and tectonic setting the Lower
