Carbohydrate Polymers, 2013Alginates are (1→4) linked linear copolysaccharides composed of β-D-mannuronic acid (M) and its C-5 epimer, α-L-guluronic acid (G). Several strategies for synthesis of carboxyl modified alginate derivatives exist in the literature. Most of these however employ aqueous chemistries, such as carbodiimide coupling reactions.

Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, 2003The phase reaction conversion (PRC) headspace gas chromatographic (HSGC) technique was employed to develop a method for the determination of the content of carboxyl groups in wood fibers. Treatment of the wood fibers using hydrochloric acid was applied to convert carboxyl groups to carboxyl acids.

Determination of Carboxyl Groups
1992Carboxyl groups reportedly have been detected in native lignin, specifically in milled wood lignin, by infrared spectroscopy (Ekman and Lindberg 1960). However, the collective findings of a large number of structural studies indicate that if such groups are in fact present in native lignin, their concentration is extremely small.
