The detection in the tumor of ALK gene (anaplastic lymphoma kinase) rearrangement is a prerequisite for the ALK inhibitor therapy for non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Non-small cell lung cancer has 3 subtypes: adenocarcinoma, large cell and squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell lung cancer occurs in 20-40% of all lung cancers.

[Treatment of non-small cell lung carcinoma].
La Revue du praticien, 2003Non small cell lung cancer is the most common histologic type (80 to 85%) with an incidence of 20 to 25,000 cases by year in France. Almost fifty per cent of cases are stage IV disease, at diagnosis and the treatment is palliative by chemotherapy. Locally advanced disease is treated by an association of chemo and radiotherapy.
