ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY IN CARDIAC SURGERY
Survey of Anesthesiology, 1960Abstract The value of the electroencephalogram as an anesthetic and clinical tool in cardiac surgery is established. The electroencephalogram is a dependable and sensitive monitor of brain oxygen supply. This paper describes electroencephalographic alterations due to cardiac manipulation (without heart-lung bypass), heart-lung bypass and hypothermia.

Cardiac Surgery for Arrhythmias
Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, 2004Cardiac arrhythmia surgery was initiated in 1968 with the first successful division of an accessory AV connection for the Wolff‐Parkinson‐White syndrome. Subsequent surgical procedures included the left atrial isolation procedure and right atrial isolation procedure for automatic atrial tachycardias, discrete cryosurgery of the AV node for AV nodal ...

Complication of cardiac surgery
Forensic Science, 1975With the increasing use of surgical procedures in cases of heart disease it was decided to review the more common complications of cardiac surgery including pre-operative investigations, based on 17 years experience of autopsies on fatal cases. The problems associated with valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting are dealt with in ...

Surgery For Cardiac Myxomas [PDF]
Myxomas, particularly left-atrial myxomas, are the most common primary tumors of the heart that cardiac surgeons will be called upon to remove. Although some tumors are discovered incidentally during echocardiographic examination, many produce symptoms caused by the release of inflammatory cytokines, obstruction to intracardiac blood flow, and/or ...

Cardiac surgery in octogenarians
Acta Cardiologica, 2001The elderly segment of the Western population is increasing rapidly, and cardiac surgeons are being asked to consider the very elderly for cardiac surgery. Our objective was to obtain data on the outcome of cardiac surgery in octogenarians in order to improve the indication for surgery and to give more accurate information to patients, family and ...

Minimally invasive approach has become key in cardiac surgery over the last decade and nowadays involves all areas of expertise, as it was initially developed for mitral valve surgery and has quickly expanded also to surgery for the treatment of aortic valve disease and to myocardial revascularization.

Coronary heart disease is just as serious a problem for women as it is for men, yet historically women have been significantly underrepresented in research studies related to the disease and treatment options, including cardiac surgery. Cardiac surgery is a proven therapy for the management of coronary heart disease in women.

Robotic minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass is the most common robotic coronary procedure performed worldwide. It can be used to treat isolated left anterior descending (LAD) stenosis or can be coupled with percutaneous coronary intervention to diseased non-LAD targets in patients with multivessel disease.

This chapter discusses the anaesthetic management of cardiac surgery. It begins with a description of myocardial oxygen supply and demand, risk scoring for cardiac surgery, and cardiopulmonary bypass. Surgical procedures covered include coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (including emergency and redo CABG), aortic valve replacement (including ...
