Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases: A Systematic Review of Functional Foods, Medicinal Plants, Phytochemicals, Bioactive Compounds and Nutrients Effective Against Metabolic Diseases

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
The study demonstrates how functional foods, medicinal plants, phytochemicals, bioactive compounds and essential nutrients combat metabolic diseases. It highlights their mechanisms, including antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, insulin‐sensitising, lipid‐regulating, gut microbiota‐modulating and mitochondrial‐enhancing effects, leading to improved ...

Diminished exercise capacity and mitochondrial bc1 complex deficiency in tafazzin-knockdown mice.

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2013
The phospholipid, cardiolipin, is essential for maintaining mitochondrial structure and optimal function. Cardiolipin-deficiency in humans, Barth syndrome, is characterized by exercise intolerance, dilated cardiomyopathy, neutropenia and 3-methyl ...

Isolation and purification of cardiolipin from beef heart.

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1985
A simple and efficient procedure is described for the preparation of cardiolipin sodium salt from beef heart. A crude phospholipid fraction is isolated by chloroform-methanol extraction of the homogenized tissue, followed by acetone precipitation and ...

Posterior Interosseous Nerve Palsy in a 43-Year-Old Patient: A Case Report. [PDF]

open access: yesClin Case Rep
ABSTRACT A 43‐year‐old male presented with subacute severe right posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) palsy, wrist drop, pustular lesions, and elevated ESR. Electrodiagnostic studies revealed axonal neuropathy. Imaging ruled out structural compression. The patient, referred for rheumatological consultation, was lost to follow‐up. This case highlights the

Human biomarker navigator

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
The Human Biomarker Navigator integrates the disease continuum, biomarker dynamics, cross‐organ biomarker networks, biomarker classification, and technology‐driven paradigms. It maps how biomarkers link multi‐system physiology and pathology across the nervous, respiratory, endocrine, circulatory, immune, digestive, urinary, reproductive, and ...

CryoBN‐PAGE: A Rapid and Cost‐Effective Method for the Analysis of Yeast Respiratory Complexes and Their Dynamic Organization

open access: yesYeast, EarlyView.
We present cryoBN‐PAGE, a method that enables blue native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of mitochondrial respiratory complexes and supercomplexes directly from whole yeast cells using cryogenic milling. This approach eliminates the need for mitochondrial isolation, reducing time and cost while preserving native protein complexes.

Docosahexaenoic acid accumulates in cardiolipin and enhances HT-29 cell oxidant production

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1998
The objective of this study was to investigate membrane fatty acids for their effects on mitochondrial function in live cells. Mitochondrial potential and oxidant production were measured in human colonic adenocarcinoma (HT-29) cells with membranes ...

A pro‐inflammatory cytokine signature characterises thrombotic antiphospholipid syndrome despite stable anticoagulation

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
Primary antiphospholipid syndrome comprises distinct inflammatory subgroups defined by cytokine profiling. A shared pro‐inflammatory signature is present across all patients, whereas arterial thrombosis demonstrates enhanced inflammatory activation compared with venous thrombosis, suggesting divergent pathogenic mechanisms and opportunities for ...

Abstract 067 | Special lecture: cardiolipin and mitochondrial quality control in aging

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Translational Myology
A progressive decline in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) is a fundamental feature of aging and a strong predictor of mobility loss, cognitive decline, and dementia.
