Adjustment of positive end‐expiratory pressure based on body mass index during general anaesthesia: a randomised controlled trial*

open access: yesAnaesthesia, EarlyView.
Summary Introduction Lung‐protective ventilation is essential for preventing postoperative pulmonary complications. While maintaining a low driving pressure and optimising PEEP is of importance, the ideal strategy remains contentious. This study evaluated whether adjusting PEEP based on BMI, compared with standard PEEP, could reduce driving pressure ...

Individual and combined effects of chemical and mechanical power on postoperative pulmonary complications: a secondary analysis of the REPEAT study

open access: yesAnaesthesia, EarlyView.
Summary Introduction Intra‐operative supplemental oxygen and mechanical ventilation expose the lungs to potentially injurious energy. This can be quantified as ‘chemical power’ and ‘mechanical power’, respectively. In this study, we sought to determine if intra‐operative chemical and mechanical power, individually and/or in combination, are associated ...

Intravenous methadone for pain management in cardiac surgery: a randomised controlled trial with plasma concentration analysis*

open access: yesAnaesthesia, EarlyView.
Summary Introduction Postoperative pain after cardiac surgery remains significant despite the administration of opioids. Methadone may improve pain control and decrease the need for postoperative opioids. Randomised controlled trials, however, are limited and the effects of cardiopulmonary bypass on methadone pharmacokinetics are unclear.
