Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Risk of cardiovascular mortality associated with very high HDL-cholesterol level and hyperuricemia in chronic kidney disease

open access: yes, 2023
We thank Dr Naharci for his letter to the Editor [1] and the comments related to our article on the joint predictive power of serum uric acid (SUA) and very high HDLcholesterol for cardiovascular mortality (CVM) in the participants of the URRAH study

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Longitudinal circulating tumor DNA profiling in patients with advanced endometrial cancer using an off‐the‐shelf targeted NGS panel

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Intratumour heterogeneity complicates precision management of advanced endometrial cancer. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) offers a minimally invasive strategy to capture tumor evolution and therapeutic resistance. Here, we compare tumor‐agnostic NGS with tumor‐informed ddPCR, outlining their relative sensitivity, concordance, and clinical implications ...

Hypopituitarism and Cardiovascular Risk

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Hypopituitarism, resulting from a partial or complete deficiency of anterior or posterior pituitary hormones, is associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality. This heterogeneous endocrinological disorder may arise from various etiologies, including genetic mutations, pituitary tumors, traumatic brain injury, and autoimmune ...

PTH and cardiovascular risk

open access: yesAnnales d'Endocrinologie, 2021
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of non-communicable chronic diseases, are related to high morbidity and mortality and are associated to a huge impact on healthcare budgets. Biomarkers play an important role for the diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases and are recognized tools for value-based care. Parathyroid hormone (PTH)

Screening and epitope characterization of Nidogen‐2‐specific nanobodies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Camel immunization and phage display were employed to generate high‐affinity VHH nanobodies against Nidogen‐2. After library construction, biopanning, ELISA screening, sequencing, and recombinant expression, selected nanobodies were purified and characterized, leading to the preliminary exploration of a nanobody‐based sandwich ELISA for specific ...

Debate: Testosterone Therapy Reduces Cardiovascular Risk in Men with Diabetes. Against the Motion

open access: yes, 2015
© 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York. Observationally, men with low testosterone are more vulnerable to type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In meta-analysis of, albeit small, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) giving men testosterone improves glucose ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.
