Immature Stages of the Caribbean Fruit Fly, Anastrepha suspensa

open access: yesThe Florida Entomologist, 1979
Brief descriptions and developmental times of the immature stages of Anastrepha suspensa (Loew) are given with emphasis on the methods of identifying larval stages. On the basis of larval mouth hook measurements, 3 larval instars have been established. Larvae having mouth hooks with average lengths of 39.2 @+ 0.25 @m, 141.7 @+ 0.54@m and 225.0 @+ 1.14 ...

The link between colorfulness and extinction risk across the world's passerine birds

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 5, October 2026.
Abstract Many of the functional traits that mediate extinction risk across the range of biodiversity relate indirectly to a species’ ability to persist in a changing world, yet certain traits such as coloration directly affect human interactions with wildlife.

Making Mining Licit: Gold, Commodification, and the Everyday Performance of Law in Colombia

open access: yesAmerican Anthropologist, Volume 128, Issue 3, Page 480-493, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Ethnographies of resource‐making have shown that the extraction of resource value from objects is premised on obviating the emplaced lifeworlds that surrounded objects before they traveled to consumer markets. Much of this literature looks at such supply‐chain disentanglement from the viewpoint of corporate and formal regulatory practices ...

Host Marking Pheromone (HMP) in the Mexican Fruit Fly Anastrepha ludens

open access: yesCHIMIA, 2010
Host marking pheromones (HMPs) are used by insects to mark hosts (usually a fruit) where they have already laid eggs. The compounds serve as a deterrent to conspecifics avoiding over-infestation of hosts (i.e. repeated egg-laying into an already

“On a tree”, “terrestrial”, or “on the rocks”? Habit diversity in the megadiverse genus Peperomia

open access: yesPlant Biology, Volume 28, Issue 5, Page 1373-1384, August 2026.
The plasticity of a large proportion of Peperomia species to occupy multiple types of microhabitats is not well documented due to the typically rigid categorization of habitat use. Therefore, the numerical approach presented is methodologically innovative to advance ecological data integration to provide a more realistic visualization of the habitat ...

On the botanical history and nomenclature of the New World genus Piscidia (Fabaceae)

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, Volume 2026, Issue 7, July 2026.
Piscidia L. (Fabaceae) is a New World genus with nine recognized taxa (seven species and two varieties). The previous nomenclatural revisions, made in 1910 and in 1969, are revisited here. The names Derris grandifolia Heyde & Lux ex Donn.Sm. and P. cubensis Urb. required step II lectotypifications, with an epitype for the latter name.

International Tourism in the Global South: Revealing an Extractive Development Process

open access: yesThe Political Quarterly, Volume 97, Issue 3, Page 423-430, July/September 2026.
Abstract Hosting international tourism remains a key development strategy for many Global South countries to generate economic growth, government revenue and employment. However, this conventional wisdom can be contested: tourism may instead be seen as an extractive process that disrupts livelihoods, ecosystems and host economies.

Fruit Fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) Research in Latin America: Myths, Realities and Dreams [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
I offer a critical assessment of fruit fly research in Latin America based on the notion that many myths and misconceptions are forced upon students and young scientists or government officials. I argue that after an enlightening beginning of the century,
