The Fish Behind Fish Feed: Rethinking Transparency Using DNA Tools

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 27, Issue 3, Page 771-780, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquaculture is now the fastest growing food sector and may be a promising solution to increasing seafood demands. Yet, carnivorous aquaculture species such as salmon and seabass continue to rely on fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO), which are derived largely from pelagic fish that are sometimes key to the food security of some coastal nations. Aquatic and Terrestrial Invertebrates Support Fish Assemblages of Amazonian Streams

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The Amazonian stream network is remarkable not only for its extent but also for its rich fish diversity. These streams are interconnected with the surrounding forests. However, key ecological aspects of Amazonian freshwater ecosystems, such as energy flows and carbon sources sustaining fish assemblages, remain poorly understood. In this study,

Metacommunity Structure, Species Richness and Species Composition of Reef Fish Trophic Guilds Along an Extensive Latitudinal Gradient in the Tropics

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Our goals were (1) to identify the metacommunity structure of the reef fish fauna as well as the structure of its constituent trophic guilds (invertivores, generalist carnivores, omnivores, herbivores, planktivores and piscivores); (2) to evaluate the extent to which metacommunity compartmentalization is associated with biogeographic ...

Fit for purpose? Analysis of the relationship between skull, beak shape and feeding ecology in Psittaciformes

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 248, Issue 5, Page 873-887, May 2026.
Psittaciformes exhibit high levels of morphological diversity, particularly in skull and beak structure, previously linked to diet and body size. Although there were some levels of significance between diet and beak shape, body mass was a much stronger co‐variate. Diet is not determining beak shape within the clade.
