Reef fish assemblages impacted by sponges overgrowing corals

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Numerous stressors are driving long‐term declines in coral cover on coral reefs, significantly impacting reef fish biodiversity and community structure. The benthic space made available by declining coral cover is often occupied by increases in other organisms, including macroalgae, encrusting ascidians, and sponges.

Revisiting the predation paradox for the Wood Thrush, a declining Neotropical migrant

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Despite an increased density of mid‐trophic level predators in urban and suburban areas compared to rural areas, the survival of smaller prey animals, including the eggs and chicks of nesting songbirds, often remains relatively high in these areas.

Feeding Ecology of Gould's Arrow Squid Nototodarus gouldi (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae) in Aotearoa New Zealand Waters

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 53, Issue 2, June 2026.
Squids are important components of marine ecosystems because of their role as both predator and prey. Across the Tasman Sea, Gould's arrow squid (Nototodarus gouldi) is a commercially targeted ommastrephid squid that supports an economically important fishery.

Functional divergence drives the prevalence of low‐abundance species in bat assemblages

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 6, Page 1587-1602, June 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecological communities are structured by a few common species, while most occur at low abundance. Understanding the drivers of this widespread pattern raises fundamental questions about community assembly rules and is important for applied ecology for identifying ...

Interplay of Diet, Heat Stress, and the Microbiome Shapes Health and Escape Behaviour in Amphibian Larvae

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 6, June 2026.
Diet and temperature jointly shape the gut microbiome and host performance in amphibian larvae. In a multifactorial experiment with Rana temporaria, diet quality, rearing temperature, and heatwave exposure altered microbial communities and predicted metabolic pathways, while host health remained largely stable, suggesting microbiome plasticity and ...

Optimal use of plant protein concentrates in extruded feeds for carnivorous fish

open access: yes, 2011
The main objective of the research presented in this thesis was to evaluate multiple amino acidsupplemented plant protein concentrates as the main protein source in diets for carnivorous fish. This objective was approached experimentally by: 1) Determining the effects of using plant protein concentrates to provide 30 %, 50 %, and 95 % of total protein ...

Cities at Sea: Coastal Urbanization Generates Local Biodiversity Hotspots but Homogenizes Marine Fish Communities Regionally

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 6, June 2026.
We investigated whether coastal urbanization drives marine communities toward greater similarity, a process well‐documented as urban biotic homogenization in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems but largely unexplored in the marine realm. From seawater environmental DNA samples collected along the French Mediterranean coastline targeting fish ...

Debaryomyces hansenii and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa comprised the yeast core gut microbiota of wild and reared carnivorous salmonids, croaker and yellowtail

open access: yes, 2014
This is the first study using molecular and culture-based methods aimed at investigating the composition of the intestinal yeast microbiota of wild and reared carnivorous salmonids, croaker and yellowtail, to characterize their cores and to evaluate the ...
