Traumatic dislocation of the first carpometacarpal joint

We present a case report and review of the literature of traumatic dislocation of the carpometacarpal joint of the left thumb without associated fracture. The injury was sustained while skiing, and after emergency department diagnosis, the dislocation was reduced and the joint stabilized with a splint.

Injuries to the carpometacarpal joints can be pure dislocations or fracture dislocations. The injuries can be specific to a single joint or in combination with other joints. Some dislocations are successfully treated nonoperatively but many benefit from some sort of stabilization, commonly percutaneous Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation.
