ULNAR DISLOCATION OF FIFTH CARPOMETACARPAL JOINT

Carpometacarpal dislocations may be dorsal, volar or divergent type but most are dorsal with involvement of 4th and 5th metacarpal. We are reporting first case of ulnar type of unilateral dislocation of 5th carpometacarpal joint.

Basal Thumb Joint (Carpometacarpal Joint)

Degenerative or inflammatory arthritis of the thumb carpometacarpal joint. This is a very common condition and presents with radial hand or wrist pain and loss of grip strength. Failure of conservative methods is an indication for injection therapy. Other small joints in the hand can be injected in a similar way.

Traumatic dislocation of the first carpometacarpal joint

We present a case report and review of the literature of traumatic dislocation of the carpometacarpal joint of the left thumb without associated fracture. The injury was sustained while skiing, and after emergency department diagnosis, the dislocation was reduced and the joint stabilized with a splint.

Carpometacarpal Joint Injuries

Injuries to the carpometacarpal joints can be pure dislocations or fracture dislocations. The injuries can be specific to a single joint or in combination with other joints. Some dislocations are successfully treated nonoperatively but many benefit from some sort of stabilization, commonly percutaneous Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation.

The first carpometacarpal joint is formed by the proximal joint facet of the first metacarpal and the distal joint on the trapezium. The morphologic features of these facets, together with a lax but strong joint capsule, give the thumb great mobility and play a major role in the opposition of the thumb.
