Seasonal variability of scavenger visitations is independent of carrion predictability
In temperate regions, larger mammalian carrion naturally occurs in terrestrial landscapes as a pulsed resource towards the end of the winter through enhanced ungulate mortality due to starvation or exhaustion.

An annotated checklist of Wisconsin Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) [PDF]
A survey of Wisconsin Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) conducted from literature searches, collection inventories, and three years offield work (1997-1999), yielded 177 species representing nine families, two of which, Ochodaeidae and Ceratocanthidae ...

We describe the host response continuum for highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIV), including the continuum of host responses to HPAIV infection and exposure based on the primary axis of host competence, ability to infect other hosts, and host vulnerability.

Food Plants of Some Adult Sphinx Moths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) [PDF]
Excerpt: While food plants of many species of sphinx moth larvae are well known, food plants of the adults are not. Many observations of the feeding habits of adult sphinx moths undoubtedly have been made, but much of the information is probably resting ...

We placed 214 avian carcasses in a desert environment at locations not associated with infrastructure and monitored their removal by scavengers using camera traps. We found that 211 of the 214 carcasses were scavenged and median persistence time was 1.53 days. None of the predictor variables were informative of carcass persistence times.

Wind, waves, wing loading and the flight energetics of giant petrels
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Wind is a major factor driving seabird movement and energetics, the effects of which are modulated by morphology. Developments in tagging technology now make it possible to test predictions from aerodynamic theory about the effects of wind on flight performance in free ...

Herbivore and mesocarnivore carcasses trigger divergent short‐term changes in soil properties
Scavengers reshape nutrient cycles in soils under carrion. Compared to herbivore carcasses, smaller but longer‐lasting carnivore remains boost nutrient levels and microbial activity in dry soils. Abstract Animal corpses act as pulses of organic matter (OM) and serve a key zoogeochemical role by providing localized nutrient inputs to soils and thereby ...
