Caribbeanist Anthropology and Minerva's Owl: Lessons Forgotten, Lessons Learned

open access: yesThe Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology, Volume 27, Issue 3, Page 289-308, September 2022., 2022
Abstract This essay presents a sketch of what a critical genealogy of the anthropology of the Caribbean might involve. After looking at the origins of anthropological interest in the region, I will focus on two case studies that, for better or worse, may be said to have had lasting diagnostic value for key epistemological orientations in Caribbeanist ...

Fragile connections: Community computer networks, human infrastructures, and the consequences of their breakdown in Havana

open access: yesAmerican Anthropologist, Volume 124, Issue 2, Page 383-398, June 2022., 2022
Abstract To compensate for their lack of internet access, Cuban video game enthusiasts and programmers have built vast grassroots computer networks, the biggest of which, SNET (Street Network), at one point connected tens of thousands of households across Havana.

Identifying the possibilities and pitfalls of conducting IUCN Red List assessments from remotely sensed habitat information based on insights from poorly known Cuban mammals

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 5, Page 1598-1614, October 2021., 2021
Abstract The International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species (RLS) is the key global tool for objective, repeatable assessment of species’ extinction risk status, and plays an essential role in tracking biodiversity loss and guiding conservation action.

State and life in Cuba: calibrating ideals and realities in a state‐socialist system for food provision

open access: yesSocial Anthropology, Volume 28, Issue 4, Page 803-826, November 2020., 2020
Based on our collective ethnography of Cuba’s socialist system for the provision of state‐subsidised food, this article explores manners in which the state weaves itself into the fabric of people’s everyday lives in state‐socialist society. Instituted by Cuba’s revolutionary government in the early 1960s, Cuba’s ‘state system for provisioning’ is still

A Comprehensive Review on Bast Fibre Retting Process for Optimal Performance in Fibre‐Reinforced Polymer Composites

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, Volume 2020, Issue 1, 2020., 2020
Natural fibres are a gift from nature that we still underutilise. They can be classified into several groups, and bast natural fibre reinforcement in polymer composites has the most promising performance, among others. However, numerous factors have reported influences on mechanical properties of the fibre‐reinforced composite, including natural fibre ...

Evaluation of Precipitation Forecast of System: Numerical Tools for Hurricane Forecast

open access: yesAdvances in Meteorology, Volume 2020, Issue 1, 2020., 2020
Heavy rainfall events, typically associated with tropical cyclones (TCs), provoke intense flooding, consequently causing severe losses to life and property. Therefore, the amount and distribution of rain associated with TCs must be forecasted precisely within a reasonable time to guarantee the protection of lives and goods.

Exposure to Vape Products Elicits Neural Activity Patterns Indicative of Approach Motivation Among Young People

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 31, Issue 2, February 2026.
We used electroencephalography and novel ‘neural decoding’ techniques to establish whether exposure to e‐cigarette products triggers automatic and unconscious product approach tendencies. Results show that young people’s vape approach tendencies can be predicted from brain activity as early as 100‐300 ms after exposure.

Genotypic ranking and repeatability coefficient in elephant grass genotypes for biomass production for energy applications

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences &Environment, Volume 8, Issue 2, June 2025.
Abstract Energy demand has become a global bottleneck, and the search for alternative sources is intensifying worldwide. In this context, elephant grass emerges as an excellent alternative due to its high dry matter production capacity coupled with beneficial biomass quality, high fiber content, high C/N ratio, and high calorific value.

Diversity of Lifeways in Early Antillean Societies: A Multi‐Isotope Approach

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Biological Anthropology, Volume 186, Issue 4, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Objectives In this paper, we sought to examine whether people with different lifeways, as evidenced by their mobility patterns and dietary practices, inhabited the Antilles in early precolonial time. We also aimed to explore spatiotemporal trends.
