It has two types of sources: symmetric and asymmetric source. In this topology asymmetric source is preferred because it provides large number of output voltage level with minimum number of switches.

Nine level cascaded H-bridge multilevel DC-link inverter
2011 International Conference on Emerging Trends in Electrical and Computer Technology, 2011This paper presents the nine level cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter based on a multilevel DC link (MLDCL) and a bridge inverter to reduce the number of switches. An MLDCL can be a diode-clamped phase leg, a flying-capacitor phase leg, or cascaded half-bridge cells with each cell having its own DC source.

Improved power rating of cascaded H-Bridge multilevel inverter
2015 Annual IEEE India Conference (INDICON), 2015This paper presents a simulation of 5-level Cascaded Diode Clamped Half Bridge (CDCHB) Inverter using Hybrid Level-shifted and Phase-shifted (HLP) Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) technique. The output voltage, output current and voltage across each device, and the THD of the CDCHB inverter are obtained.
